If a remove a machine gun and replace with the welded plate part, can I use this hull for the Firefly? Then add a machine gun to the M4 75mm and still be able to use the front hull. I'm thinking my turret switch will work as shown since the shermans had a wide variety.
Thanks for more help,
Greg

P.S. I have on order the, "Tanks in detail: Sherman and Firefly" book to help me later too.

The Metal Hulls may be a blessing afterall! I can just unscrew the lower hull of the M4 and make a switch that way. I swear seeing a picture of your model helps your build a lot. Anything else to consder please Help!
Thanks GREG

FIREFLIES

September 11 2007, 8:32 PM

This info is from BRITISH TANKS IN NORMANDY (take that for what its worth) states that the FIREFLY conversions were done mainly on Sherman V (M4A4) but also on Mk 1's and Mk 1 Hybrids (M4). Only 75mm turrets were used due to the mantlet configuration, 105mm turrets were not used due to being manually traversed. The M4A1 seems to have not been used because of the cast hull and lack of space for ammo. The M4A2 was a bit scarce at this time and aparently not used?.

The hull was modified by deleting the bow machine gun and plugging the opening with armor plate and using the area of the assistant driver/radio operator for ammo storage.

This is not gospel and I only used the single source as my Hunnicut book is on loan at the moment.

Thanks Steve. I can find no difference in these Tamiya upper hulls, so this is what they look like with the lower hulls changed. Now, I just need to correct the machine gun (or lack of) in the hull.
