Here you go Bruce, You can take a break from your hectic Sherman conversion projects with this Canadian or British Sherman ( the photo was taken in Amsterdam so I'm assuming it is British or Canadian): Note it has rubber chevron tracks and Hauler style track extenders (alas it also has steel chevron and 3 bar cleat track applique armour but the main thing is that it has rubber chevron tracks)

Go to this site and then click on Rhineland war walks for this picture and many other Shermans

Evil, evil.......

You know you love to hurt me..... This is a very interesting Sherman, and I have saved the pic so I can add it to the list of potential model candidates. I can't tell exactly what version it is - Sherman I (M4) or Sherman III (M4A2), but perhaps other sources will pinpoint this later.

The same photo is on the IWM photodatabase (sorry about the huge URL)

Identifying the owners as part of 8th Armoured Brigade. The short history of the 8th AB suggests to me that the regiment is either 4/7RDG or the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry

The tank is more likely to be a Sherman III (but not guaranteed of course).

There are more Kevelaer photos on the IWM database too.

Beret badges just a little too small to identify

Sherman...

September 27 2007, 11:16 AM

From the way the stowage on the rear deck is placed at the rear away from the turret, I'd guess this is a Sherman III, which is how I'll model it. Note all the different kinds of tracks are on this thing, as running gear or extra armor. I'm now trying to find photos for all the Shermans I model for my little project, so I can reproduce the vehicle, the camo and markings, and the stowage. Beats making up stuff....

Sherman III

8AB are definitely Sherman III users, so it seems highly likely.

They're also occasional users of painted camouflage, and this Sherman appears to have stripes on the forward hull side and centre of the nose that don't look like weathering.

Camo on Sherman III, 8 AB.....

September 27 2007, 3:58 PM

David, I didn't pick up on the camo pattern, but you are right, and that makes this subject even more attractive for the "zoo."

British camouflage in NW Europe.....

September 27 2007, 4:46 PM

According to Mike Starmer, there were no standard camouflage patterns for vehicles assigned to units in NW Europe. Standardized patterns apparently were used only in the Med (Afirca and Italy). I'll have to read Mike's book on Europe more thoroughly, as I have concentrated on Africa and Italy so far. At any rate, there are a number of very attractive camo schemes that will result in distinctive models. Now, we just need to have all those lovely types of tracks that are on this tank - four in all: rubber chevron T48 on the vehicle (with the dreaded square EECs ), steel chevron T54E1 on the turret, steel 3-bar T49 on the glacis, and steel British riveted chevron T62..... I HAVE to build this one, as I have all the track except the T62, and I believe young Tim may be providing that in the near future.
