Jagdpanther question?November 20 2007 at 6:04 AM | Jimbo D (Login JimboD) from IP address 124.185.159.150 |
| I am trying to identify what looks like to be a storage bin to the left of the crew entrance.( rear of upper hull.) My reference is Jagdpanther by Janusz Ledwoch " militaria in detail" no 4. Wydawnictwo press.
An example is on page 22. bottom drawing. this gives me a side view but I have not been able to locate a 3 dimentional view so as to replicate it on a model. Any lead would be appreciated. So far I have found nothing on the net.
There could also be a bin ( Identical perhaps.) or whatever on the other side also.
mant thanks in advance regards jimbo

Storage bins were found on mid production models as far as I know. The Tamiya version is a later production version |

There are pictures of tank 314 in Gunpower 24 on the Jagdpanther. The bin is a field modification and sits flush against the top and outer side of the hull. The top is horizontal but the bottom is 90 degrees to the slope of the hull. The outer, left, side when viewed from the rear follows the side of the hull while the right side is vertical. However, this is a mid-productin model with zimmerit on the top of the hull.
There's also another Jagdpanther from 3 Schw. H PzJag Abt 654 with the hull bin, but again it's a zimmerited tank.
I always take the view that not every single model has to be exactly like photographs and references. If you think it looks cool with the bin, put it on. There's a great chance one tank had this done it, after all. |

I guess if it's a field mod I have some scope to work with. Next two questions. Would you recommend a width for the bin and also were they located both sides of the vechicle.?
I am using the Tamiya kit but as far as I can see quite a few late Jadgpanthers were remanufacted hulls and as such had most of the Zimmerite with patchs missing. ( I guess they would have not wasted time removing old zimmerite in the remanufacture process.)
I have a reference to work on but unfortunatly only the side view for the bin in question.
The Jagdpanthers seem to have a lot of individual set ups ( by their crews I suspect) so the normal rules for reference for your model are not as straight forward as usual.
On the other hand I enjoy the challenge of trying to reference the model as much as possible but at some stage of the game you have to make choise and get on with it.
Thanks for the responses regards Jimbo

Hi Jimbo,
The width at the top seems to be about 50 cm, or 10.2 mm in 1/48 scale to be exact. The height of the bin is a tiny fraction more. There's only one bin on the left, the right side has the shovel fastened diagonally downwards from the hatch to the outside, the fire extinguisher is right next to the hatch below the shovel and in an upright position. The sledgehammer is next to the right hand engine grill, parallell to the length of the tank, the bolt cutters are below the left engine grill. The jackblock is on the lower edge of the engine hatch and the cleaning rod tube is at the rear of the hull. |

I think that just about solves the problems. Now to do a bit of modelling. It makes a good talking point to add something a bit different to a model. Thanks for you help. Sure shows what a good resource a forum is. regards jimbo |
