is anyone making the Israeli version of a Sherman or would either the Korean Hobbyboss or British Firefly be close enough?

I have not done yet, well cast up as a resin kit anyway. I am a long way into the build though, probably too far for mold making but a interesting conversion anyway.

Israeli Shermans.....

February 27 2008, 8:13 AM

Currently, no one in 1/48 does the Israeli M50 Sherman, but you could cobble one together using the Hobby Boss M4A3E8 as a starting point. The hull is still wrong, but you could get a late large hatch M4A1 hull or the late M4A3 hull corrected (Iron Division or Faxon). The turret and gun would have to be scratchbuilt, but the basis is the late 75mm small turret with a new front for the long 75mm gun and a rear bustle counterweight, plus the special Israeli detail changes. To my knowledge, no one makes an M50 turret in 1/48. Still, this model can be done, just not out of the box.

If doing an M-50 or M-51 I highly reccomend george Bradford's excellent 48th scale drawings of both. Chris "Toadman" Hughes also has a few excellent books on both types on his website. You may want to check them out!

I'm out of the books...

February 27 2008, 2:44 PM

...but maybe getting a few more soon from the author. In the meantime, "Lioness and Lion of the Line" can be found at www.spruebrothers.com which still has a few in stock. This book covers the early M50 with VVSS suspension. Get it while you can as it is no longer in print. If we can get a decent M50 turret from someone(Mr. Faxon? Iron Division?) there are already enough hulls to make early M50's as they were built on pretty much all of the different M4 hulls.

Brano Herain made it like this:
M4A3E8(HVVS)+M4A1(76) W = IDF M1 Sherman

Hi Petr;

I see confusion setting in here.
What Dan was asking about was the Israeli M50, not the M1.
To try and clarify a teeny bit...

ISRAELI
M1 SuperSherman (on late production M4A1s with T23 turrets & 76mm gun) HVSS suspension
M50 Mk I SuperSherman (on M4A4 and other Sherman chassis) still with VVSS suspension... but
the new M50 turret and French M50 75mm gun. re-engined.
M50 Mk II SuperSherman (as above, but now with HVSS suspension after 1960) re-engined
M51 HV - Large hatch Shermans with T23 turrets adapted for the AMX 105mm gun. HVSS suspension.

I'm sure I screwed up somewhere, but that's it in a nutshell.

M1 M50

February 28 2008, 2:20 AM

FROM Wikipedia
Sherman M-1 - Israeli designation of any Sherman model armed with the 76 mm gun M1.

* Super Sherman M-1 - Israeli designation of M4A1(76) fitted with HVSS suspension.

# Sherman M-3 (Sherman degem Alef prior to 1956) - Israeli designation of any Sherman model armed with the 75 mm gun M3.
# Sherman M-4 (Sherman degem Bet prior to 1956) - Israeli designation of any Sherman model armed with the 105 mm howitzer M4.
# Sherman M-50 - Upgraded Sherman with the French CN 75-50 75 mm gun, as used in the French light tank AMX 13, in the "old" turret fitted with a counterweight. Entered service in 1956. Was used in the Suez Crisis (1956), the Six Days War (1967) and the Yom Kippur War (1973). Sometimes colloquially mis-named as Super Sherman.

as it is, I think the hobby boss kit {Korea} suspension, turret

and hull from the other hobby boss kit correct?

They are in Colorado. I have read that they have fitting issues but for the price I will take a shot.
