CMK Schmallturm

I just recieved a CMK Schmallturm from Squadron (they were on sale). On the packaging CMK calls this item a Panzer lV Schmallturm, and in the illustration it shows it mounted on (of course) a Pz. lV. In all my references I've never seen a project for a Pz. lV with this turret. As we all know, one was developed for the Panther. Is this an error on CMK's part? The turret appears identical with the one developed for the Panther, which is where I intend putting it along with ML's Panther steel wheel set. A sort of 'what if' late '45 version Panther.

Small turm....

February 28 2008, 6:37 PM

Leo, I built one several years ago, Used the Tamiya 1/35th Pz.IV and a resin conversion. They were theoretical, but at least one turret was found shot up on a gunnery range...in the UK, think.
In the 1/35th one I had to move the crew hatches outward and move the turret ring to accommodate the Panther-esque turret. It jammed on too many things if left the way it was. Maybe the 1/48th one will be better....... HTH, Dave

Hmmmm...I tried fitting the turret on a Panther chassis and it looked very strange. The turret looked too squat so maybe CMK is correct after all. Looks like I'll have to buy Gasoline's Panther Schmallturm now.

Hello Leo

I have made the same experience with the CMK Schmalturm. The Schmalturn used on the Panther F and the (paper-) Panzer IV were supposed to be the very same turret. CMK got it waaaaay to small, so it might look ok on a Pz. IV, but simply looks odd on a Panther chassis.

Besides beeing to small the cupola is also incorrect. Gaso.Line could ba an option but it uses the cupola from the Panther G kit so it isn't right either, I'm afraid.

I had the same idea a while back, but the lack of a decent Schmalturm led me to use a G turret on a F hull, as shown in the picture.

Just had a sudden brain wave (Ouch!!!). I could probably build up the schmallturm turret at its base with plastic strip to the right height. What do you think?
