I was browsing my local Barnes & Noble bookstore when I came across a large softcover book called Warman's World War II Collectibles for $24.95. It was published in 2007 and has color photos of all sorts of WWII personal equipment from all participating nations. It even had a page or two pricing a US tank and some other vehicles. To get the right colors for packs, helmets, tarps, or other stowage items, I think that this book has it all. A quick search on the internet showed me that the book is available from Amazon for $16.49. Just goes to show that good research references can come from publications aimed at different markets.
