GREIF question Tracks attached to front how? WIP pic

Hi, GREIF on the right shows a row of tracks across the front. I have 4 extra track links to stretch across (from 2 kits). Are these hanging by a hook? I painted a sloppy camo on so far (my do-it-yourself paint mixture was not cooperating well and I may need to brush some grey over the splatters or see if pigments will hide enough).
Thanks again, Greg

GREIF extra tracks......

It's hard to see in this photo, but a common method to secure spare tracks was using a small cable or heavy wire to hang or secure the track in position. Other photos of GREIF do not show hooks or brackets attached to the nose armor, so I would suspect some form of wire or light cable being used here. Typically the wire would be wrapped around the headlight mounts or other mounts and brackets for tools or the width indicators. It all depended on how much weight was to be supported. All this was very ad hoc, so there weren't a lot of standardized stowage methods at this point of the war. Later, spare track stowage was added to many vehicle types.

Thanks again Bruce, I learn something new everyday here. I'll go to the afrikacorp.org website and try to zoom in on this picture too now that I know what to look for.

I'm going to guess the wires went around these 2 hooks on the top-front. I couldn't see anything else with a zoom-in.

Coming Along Nicely

I like your approach to getting the scruffy look of Greif so far Greg - have you considered an experiment with the hairspray method to get that worn away paint look? A coat of hairspray and a thin overall coat of desert yellow followed by careful scrubbing with water and a soft brush should let you rub back the topcoat to reveal the grey and tan basecoats to match the pictures.

The lifting hooks....

for the engine section armor (at the corners of the engine deck plate) would be an excellent candidate for snagging the wire holding the tracks in place. Note that the tracks are not centered; they extend farther over the right front mudguard, and the end links are probably hanging free if the wire holding the tracks is wrapped around the lifting hooks. All three of these German vehicles have absolutely lousy paint jobs - they look almost like the mud slurry overpaints done at the beginning of the African campaign.

A couple other points....

March 19 2008, 5:52 AM

Hi Greg!! I think Konrad has a good idea....might very well cover up some of that overspray. I'm not sure about the tracks. There ALMOST looks like a thin, light line going from the upper edge of the links...to go around the headlights, as Bruce mentioned.
Take a good look at the posts on the antennae....worn to dark, bare metal from everyone hanging on to them, or pulling themselves up by them. I'm pretty sure that's well past the worn off yellow paint stage...grey gone, it's down to the bare metal. It reminds me of the famous picture of the guy frying eggs on the fender of a Pz.III, I think. The paint is just GONE....bare metal left.....
And a lot of Greif is just covered in dust....a lot of sins can be covered up at the end by adding dust, and just streaking it. I've seen pictures of there being so much dust on vehicles vertical surfaces...that when it slides downward it leaves an avalanche-like trail......
HTH, Dave
Oh, BTW...the old man is tottering to the PO with your package this morning.....hope I have the gumption to reach it up to the counter to the kindly Postal Nazi in Residence....

The last pic up there is a 1/15 scale pic I found on the internet to illustrate the hooks on the hood. I hope people weren't confused by that . I am still in the infancy painting stage. I want to try pigments for a mud slurry vs. paint to see if the texture will look more natural. Thanks for the ideas though. Greg
