Sherman Firefly Paint Question

After an absence of many months from the 1/48 scale, I have plunged back in. My short tenure with braille scale (1/72) has left me half blind and I need a good change.
I am currently building the Tamiya Firefly IC and I'm abit confused with the correct color. I see references with British Bronze green Fireflys, OD Green Fireflys and Dark Green Fireflys. Which color would be correct??? I prefer using Tamiya acrylics. The instructions call for TS-2 Dark Green.

Can of paint....

June 12 2008, 8:42 PM

Brett, I'm going with the White Ensign SCC 15 enamel, when I get my Hybrid 1c into the spray shop.  www.whiteensignmodels.com for more details. There are some good mixes on the web, but if you want to know the history of all these camo colours, White Ensign also sell some excellent booklets by Mike Starmer, which give lots of info, as well as colour chips and some suggested mixes. Also, the MAFVA website has this comprehensive set of notes, http://www.mafva.net/other%20pages/Starmer%20camo.htm by the same chap!

Hope this helps,

Tim

TAMIYA MIX

June 13 2008, 2:53 AM

Brett,
No need to get exotic, keep it simple and mix ONE bottle of TAMIYA XF-49 KHAKI with ONE bottle of TAMIYA XF-51 KHAKI DRAB....and you're good to go!
I discoverd this mix by accident years ago and have been using it since!
It will give you a browner drab which is what the British SCC15 weathered out to be, more brown than the greener US OD.

Sorry, but I think you've got that wrong. Most sources I've read state that SCC15 was a GREENER version of US od. An often used Tamiya mix is XF58 olive green with XF62 olive drab at about 4:3 ratio.

Hi Guys

I have to second Geoffrey here.

The British colour is a lot greener and more intense than the US colour. I can't post the picture but I have a still from the War in Europe DVD showing a US and British vehicle togeather. The difference is amazing.

SCC 15 is very good although earlier batches were a little off due to a dirty sample these have all gone now. I tend to add a small amount of blue grey to lighten it a fraction as the colour is matched for a full sized vehicle.
