FAMO from a Bandai 8 Ton

Hey Everyone,

I just received some cd's from a gentleman in response to an enquiry about drawings on the Bussing NAG with the Bilstein crane. The drawings are 1/35 scale which I reduced to 1/48 so I can scratchbuild the crane, since the Wespe or Gaso.Line kit is no longer available. There were also drawings of the 18 ton Famo which I also converted to 1/48. They look pretty close to the Bandai 1/48 8 tonner. I'm wondering if it could be used as a base for scratchbuilding a Famo 18 tonner. I don't have any dimensions for either vehicle, so I'm asking the pros for their opinion.

Hi Clary,

The Sd.Kfz.7 and Sd.Kfz 9 are two very different vehicles that share virtually no common parts. They're also very different in size.

So unless Bandai really screwed up the size & shape of their Sd.Kfz.7 kit, unfortunately your idea won't work.

Hopefully Tamiya will come to the rescue and one day release a FAMO in 'our' scale.

Cheers,

Alex.

German halftracks.....

September 9 2008, 11:13 PM

Clary, the FAMO SdKfz 9 18-ton tractor is about 50% bigger than the SdKfz 7 8-ton tractor. Although many of the larger German artillery tractors look the same, they differed in size quite a bit. The FAMO is larger than the Tiger I tank. I'm afraid there is no way to make a 1/48 FAMO from the 1/48 Bandai SdKfz 7 kit. You would be better off starting with the 1/35 Tamiya kit - that's closer to the size of the FAMO compared to the SdKfz 7. To give you an idea of the difference, you would use the tracks from the Revell 1/72 FAMO SdKfz 9 to go on the 1/48 Bandai SdKfz 7 8-ton tractor to improve the suspension. And you'd use the 1/72 SdKfz 7 tracks to use on the Bandai SdKfz 251......

Bruce, what else would you recommend to spruce up the Bandai 8-ton so that it can share a diorama with a Tamiya kit?

Tamiya SdKfz 7 8-ton tractor.....

The Bandai kit is really a reduced Tamiya in terms of accuracy and detail. It could use some PE for the smaller details, but of course, there isn't any because the Bandai stuff isn't kin production. Nigel Savage at Parabellum UK was able to get Hauler to make up a run of PE for the old Bandai Valentine Mk III tank, as apparently there are a number of them available in the UK. Except for that, there isn't much for any of the Bandai stuff.

Changing out the tracks, thinning the body side panels around the crew entry cutouts, and adding the smaller details would go a long way to perking up this old warhorse. For example, the tool stowage was on the front sides of the seat boxes above the floor, and of course, the Kar 98K rifles all had their brackets on the backs of the seats in front of the seats behind.

I had sonme shots for the SdKfz 6 5-ton tractor at Fort Knox, but I can't find them right now. They showed the tool stowage brackets, and I'd guess the stowage for the SdKfz 7 8-ton tractor was pretty much the same. I'd use the new Dragon 1/35 kit as a reference for the tool stowage, if it has such. No doubt at this point some enterprising soul has written a nice book on the SdKfz 7 (I hope....) and that will have all the internal tool stowage shown.

It would be nice to have PE for a new windshield frame and the other finer parts, but we'll have to work with scrap strips or styrene strips and .010" clear plastic for the glass. Looking at good photos and 1/35 models can be the best reference you can find. Some existing PE sets for other kits may supply some of the smaller common details you'd need (small chains, locks, etc.).

What about PE for the Revell kit. Does it exist and could it be used on the Bandai kit?

Famo...

Gasoline still makes one, but it is the armoured 88mm carrying version. A whole lot o' resin with a big price tag, but it's out there!
