Hello, greetings to all. Please I am interested in getting some information on the M4 SHERMAN ARV. If a user can give me any information would be very grateful.
I have read and visited the gallery M4 ARV by: Sergey Overchenko, and the truth is not as able to obtain this information.
You are not likely to find much hard information.....

on this vehicle, since it is not a production type. It was a field modification by the Germans in Italy, in this case sPzAbt 508, operating late production Tiger Is. The Germans were far more complimentary regarding the Sherman than we are now. Although it was at a disadvantage fighting heavy tanks weighing 12-25 tons more, it was an excellent mechanical package and the Germans loved them as tow and recovery vehicles. One Tiger unit in Italy (it may have been the 508th) once captured a couple of dozen Shermans when a new US unit abandoned their tanks upon encountering the Tigers. The Germans were distraught because they didn't have enough drivers to retrieve the Shermans and they had to blow them up.
The model Sergey built looks like a standard type of simple field mod that a unit repair unit with welding equipment could put together. I have not seen any historical photos of this particular conversion, but it is very simple. The Germans removed the turrets to lighten the vehicles, then built a cover for the turret ring for weather protection. Many Shermans used by the Germans elsewhere didn't have the metal turret ring cover, just the open hull after the turret was removed. The assembly in the center is a standard commander's gun ring hatch, no doubt taken from the Sherman's turret when the Germans converted it.
Using the Tamiya M4 kit, this would be a very easy model, one of the simplest conversions you could do. A disk of .020"-.030" (.5-.75mm) styrene sheet would cover the turret ring, and the gun ring hatch is optional. Many of these field conversions had plain openings or simple hinged hatches for access to the interior. All of this work was done with the materials at hand, and using parts from the Sherman turret would have been an obvious choice. Good luck.
