Hey Bruce..

That contribution article on the SdKfz 251 Interior in the "What's New" is truly outstanding. I can see myself referring to it several times when I get to build it.

Folks what a blessing we have with Bruce being part of this website.

Well done.

Phil

I'm glad you enjoyed the article....

I had a really good time researching this stuff, and there will be more of this in the near future. I do not have a scanner that works with my computer, but I have determined that I can photograph archival drawings and plans, and my own sketches, with my camera and transfer the pix into the computer that way. I am also looking at things, evil things, to do once the resin company is set up to make something.....happy.gif I am encouraged that I can learn fairly quickly how to cast resin reliably to make high-quality parts. I have people.....happy.gif

That article is awesome. My favorite is the picture of the seat height differences - perfect illustration to what he meant. 3 Cheers to Bruce!

Sd.Kfz. 251/7 Interior?

March 13 2009, 2:15 PM

Hi Bruce:

I'm planning an Sd.Kfz. 251/7 Ausf. D project right now and have been on the lookout for interior photos. I noticed the shots you had near the end of your article showed full sets of seats in the interior of the ex-Fort Knox 251/7, but I had read other references and seen a photo of a 251/7 Ausf. C in Panzer Tracts that showed the rear seats removed and replaced with equipment racks. I had assumed this was the same with the 251/7 Ausf. D, but now I'm not sure. Could you or anybody else shed some light on this?

Cheers and thanks,

Scott

Scott, I have checked both my PanzerTracts and....

March 13 2009, 4:38 PM

my "Schutzenpanzer" book from Ryton, and it appears the ausf C had the specialized interior with the rear seats replaced, but the ausf D had both the front and rear seats left in place. There are only plans for the ausf D, no photos, so I do not know how the pioniere equipment was stowed in the ausf D vehicles. There was a tendency later in the war to make most weapons and vehicles as standardized as possible, and add the special equipment as needed. Certainly there were no signs of special stowage arrangements in the ex-Fort Knox '251/7 ausf D now in Germany. I have both B&W and color photos of that vehicle I took in 1973 when it was outside and well lit. Perhaps I would have taken better shots if I had been well lit also, but that is another story....happy.gif The rear stowage bins are missing from this vehicle but PanzerTracts shows the bins in place on the plans for the /7 ausf D.

If you are doing the '251/7 ausf D, I'd suggest building the kit as in the kit and adding pioniere tools and equipment around the periphery and behind the seats. I have not seen loading pans for the /7 ausf D, and I suspect they may not exist, since they had been done for the ausf C. The German manuals in the National Archives don't have any stowage diagrams for the ausf B (late body) SdKfz 250 either, only the ausf A. Remember that brackets and clamps were usually labeled with painted descriptions or decals, so the crews knew where to place stowed items.

There will be more.....

when I get a bit more organized. As I have mentioned in some emails, my big obstacle is that I have very few original photos, so these original articles I make up for my own use have shots off the web and are not suitable to post on T48 due to copyright issues, so I'll probably try to stick to modeling references. My only hope is that eons ago, Steve Zaloga and I photographed the entire APG collection, including interiors and top views. That amounts to 1500-2000 pix and they could be a good source od detail shots even though they are all B&W. For some reason, everyone prefers color shots, even though most of the APG vehicles have not had accurate color schemes for decades. I also have color sides of the Fort Kknox collection outdoors from the early 1970s, and if I can find all those, other articles could appear. The bride and I are renting a dumpster one of these days and we're having a dumping party.....happy.gif
