Finally picked up a Tilly today from my LHS, £15, quite a bit for such a dinky kit. A sprue of RAF ground crew wouldn't have gone amiss, I reckon. Ah well. Anyway, I spent as much at the same time on a MiniArt light tank, just for the tracks for a Valentine, so I shouldn't complain!
Still no Hanomags though. I think they are in the same studio they used to shoot all those fake moon walk films. And you lot are all in the conspiracy to make me think I am mad!
when you say your LHS, do you mean Antics in Bristol where I got my Tilly today, or is it somewhere else for you?
I agree some figures would have been nice considering the price. Unfortunatley, Antics still have no AFV Club Sturmtigers on order.
Alan, it certainly was Antics!! You mean we might have been standing in the same queue for the till and not realised it??! I'll wear my Fighting 48th! sweat shirt from now on, then you can say 'You are Lobby Ludd and I claim my free set of towing shackles.' to me!!
I'm just trying to work out whee the next LHS would be. There is Als Hobbies on Filton Avenue, although I haven't been in the new shop since they moved from the Gloucester Road. There is Hobby Craft out at Cribbs Causeway, but where have all the other shops gone? I remember Pete Swallows Model Aerodrome which was opposite the top of Christmas Steps, The Modellers Den in Fairfax Street, Midland Educational used to keep a fair selection, as did Salensons the camera shop a few doors down. Then on Cheltenham Road there was Nobbys Hobbies, and opposite them Oxford Models (I think...) had a shop as well. And then there was Max Williams amazing railway model shop near the bus depot on Lawrence Hill. And more besides those.
Tim, by the sound of it, you are my age or even older, because I can remember most of those shops. I heard at my club, Avon IPMS, that there is a newish one somewhere near the Filton end of Southmead Road, but unfortunately I cannot remember the name of it.
I`ll try and remember what to say when I see you!
Hi Alan, I'm 51. I grew up in Bristol and walked from school to the bus station right past the Model Aerodrome, so I knew that shop very well. Now I work at the bottom of Christmas Steps so Antics is only a couple of hundred yards away. The shop on Filton Avenue is the new Als Hobbies, which is mostly RC stuff, but they sell some plastic kits.
Ref Cheltenham, that is about 35 miles from Bristol. There is a model shop, http://cheltenhammodelcentre.com/ which was pretty comprehensive the last time I visited it, a few years ago. Antics have shops in Stroud and Gloucester, although I think the Stroud one is quite small.
Cheltenham model centre post code is GL50 1DX. Antics in Bristol is BS1 3DB, Gloucester is GL1 2AG and Stroud is GL5 1AN. You can use Google Earth to find them exactly!
for the money you get an accurate semi-toy version of the Tilly, just like the 1942 Ford staff car. In this day and age, molding the drive shaft solid with the chassis pan as a ridge line instead of a separate drive shaft is just not giving the customer his/her money's worth. Fortunately, most people won't be showing the underside at all, so the faux pas will not be noticed. Wish I could find more pix of Tillies in the desert. Note that the Germans built "Tillies" that were identical to the British models except for the basic cars used to convert them, even to the spare tire on top of the cab roof.
...would have been helpful, the RAF scheme seems to be a hodge-podge of wartime markings and post-war colours! I've been hunting around for some decent image of Tilly's in wartime RAF service but the only pics I've found are of post-war restorations.
Shame they didn't try a little harder given that the kit makes up so nicely.
According to a friend of mine (Tim do you know Otto?) wartime RAF vehicles were generally Green with in the early war dark earth over areas like the wings (Fenders) and roofs.
Later they often had the black Mickey Mouse markings, Crew buses and light trucks like the little Bedfords this was the case and it could be that the pattern on the tilly was more likely an RAF vehicle.
Although I would be happy if someone actually had a picture, I've watched at lots of B/W films made during the war and the shades of grey on the vehicles does add some creadence to the early war scheme, and its obviouse that the mickey mouse pattern is there on some as well.
RAF blue was mostly post war and gloss, although some top Brass did have gloss finished RAF blue vehicles during the war as runabouts, some colour prints show this but as the colour is off a little they seem to be almost black if you correct the saturation they always turn to a nice RAF blue colour!
Otto, friend of Chris McKee? If so, yes we used to natter at the Nationals sometimes. He did a Chinook HC1 from an old Aurora kit I passed on to him through ED Models. Andrew D, remember that one? Haven't seen him for a while, although I saw Chris last year at Telford. Small world. Of course, it might be a completely different Otto! Or I might have got the name wrong anyway!! Old age does not come alone....
Tim
PS Now I think about it, I've a nagging feeling that was Ivan..... And I've just discovered I've been wearing odd socks all day. Gulp.....
I finally got the Hanomag on Friday here in Cologne. So its not vapourware.
I also saw the Tilly but 19 Euro against 22 for the 251 let me decide to get that at some other place later.
The 251 is finely detailed. I immediatley started building . So far so good. Only gripe so far is some minor fit issues and there are some ugly tool marks and rough spots over the body parts which I think need to be removed. On the other hand there is lots of fine detail out of the box.
