One of the tragedies of 1/48 is that if Hobby Boss.....

had simply copied the old Bandai Shermans and picked up the level of detail, they would have had more accurate kits. There are plenty of minor things wrong with the Bandai Shermans, but the basic shapes are there. I came up with a quick save for a bunch of them, casting new forward hull roofs (the cast portion around the drivers' hatches) and cutting them into the Bandai M4A3 hulls. The rest is just cleaning up the weld seam detail and new fuel filler caps. The shape of the Bandai hulls is fine, and since the Bandai chassis is for the diesel-powered M4A2, I have all the bottoms for my M4A2s, Sherman IIIs, and M10 GMCs.

Bruce; Did I hear you correctly? That the Bandai Sherman lower hull parts (i.e. chassis) are correct for the M4a2? Now that's a revelation and certainly opens up possibilities for my stash. Chris Schwach

Chris, yes, they are M4A2s.....

It surprised me also, but with the number of M10s, M4A2s, and Sherman IIIs I have in the building plan, it is nice to have chassis parts that are pretty good as is. You may want to add some drains and other details, but the engine hatches are there, and accurate for M4A2s. All the Hobby Boss chassis tubs are M4/M4A1, so the poor M4A3 is left in the cold. Just razor saw the engine hatch off the hull and turn it 90 degrees so it's fore and aft, not transverse, and voila - M4A3s. Again, there are some drains and smaller details, but these are optional unless you are OCD/AMS or building for an IPMS contest. (THIS is why we glue the models to the bases.....happy.gif .) If I can get Phoenix48 going in a few months, I hope to keep prices reasonable enough that using a P48 (or Faxon) hull/turret will still be affordable. I hate that we have to buy conversion/correction parts, but JEEZ, the 1/35 guys EXPECT to buy all sorts of PE/resin to get their kits right. Maybe that means we're as professional as they are.....happy.gif
