Re: m10 a1 archilles

Hello Wayne; M10A1's were Ford engined versions of the TD and as such were kept in the states for training, etc. I understand that some of them, though, got M36 turrets and became one of the versions of the M36 to see combat when returreted M10'supplies were running out. Perhaps someone can step forward and give us the straight poop on this subject. There were two basic types of ACHILLES; the "IC" and the "IIC". The latest information that I have seen indicate that the IC was based on the earlier wedge/counterweighted turret (Like our current Tamiya M10 offering) and the IIC is based on the later Duckbill turret. Most of the photos of Achilles show the IIC but if you are patient and "Dig" a bit you can find a few pics of the earlier turret version. BTW, MR models has a really nice IIC conversion to go with the Tamiya M10. Check it out in the T48 shop. I have it and it's really nice. Chris Schwach

Achilles conversion.

I would be interested in the modellbau item, but there is no image of it on Tr48's home page, nor on MR's website. Just what does their conversion kit consist of?

Pete, I didn't see it even listed.....

I don't know if they even offer it any more, though I have no idea why they would discontinue the item. It gave you the later "duckbill" extended M10 turret for the Achilles IIC, a 17 pdr breech, and additional details. I got two, and will build one as a IIC and the other as the IC, which leaves me with the "duckbill" turret to do a later US M10 GMC.

Someone posted here a while back.....

a beautiful picture if an Achilles IC that I will be building as part of the Sherman project. It has the early style turret, and this example has the applique armor bolted to the hull and turret, a most unusual vehicle indeed. It was seen in the Italian campaign, and is the only M10/Achilles I've seen with the extra armor attached.

I have some references and will look.

BTW here is a nice review of the MR Achilles conversion

http://missing-lynx.com/reviews/48/m4814reviewbg_1.html

I have their M-10 conversion also and it includes early style counterweights.

I have not built either one, but they look sweet.

Would love for someone to get an M-36 out.

Turning an M10 into an M35 in Tack48 Gallery

October 10 2009, 10:26 AM

It can be done, but as Chris mentioned, the M10A1 version was used, so the engine deck has to be rebuilt if you want it to be accurate. I did one and it was not impossible but a lot of work to build the engine grilles.

Now that we have the Hobby Boss kit you could steal bits from it to ease your task a lot, though the see-through grilles were really cool when they were done. Here is the link:

The M-35 was used to tow the 8 inch Gun/ 240MM Howitzer - the redoubtable Steve Faxon is the only one to build one of those in TOTS that I am aware of so far.
