Has anyone tried fitting Tamiya PzIV tracks to the Cromwell?

I hope to have picked up a spare Cromwell in a trade and was toying with the idea of a Korean era late build version using some Accurate Armour parts, the thing lacking is the 15"(? 15.5") tracks that these tanks were fitted with.

I've seen some notes on a 1/35th forum about using Pz.IV tracks in that scale to do the job, I was wondering if the same trick might work in 1/48th. The tread pattern seems close enough to pass once the tracks have been muddied up and weathered.

Does anyone have spare set of Tamiya Pz.IV tracks they don't have a use for and might consider trading so I can experiment?

Regards.

Cromwell tracks

Hi Les

I'm doing the same thing at the moment so can help here.

First I strongly advise modifying the Panzer IV tracks while they are still on the sprue. I didn't and have had a lot of extra hassle as a result sad.gif It's simply a matter of removing the ice cleats from the bar across the link and scribing a line along the length of the bar.

There aren't quite enough links in one set to do the job either. Not a problem for me as I'm doing an Ausf D and E using the Battalion Bits conversion and WW2 Productions track.

The drive sprocket is the biggest problem as the 15.5" tracks had a different pitch. So either add the Panzer IV teeth to the Cromwell sprocket or file the teeth away where the track contacts the Cromwell sprocket. I'm deciding what to do on this one at the moment.

HTH and good luck.

BTW Thanks for the staff car MDC wheel hint. That's back on the build list again.

Thanks for that Nick, and credit where it's due...

Might lookout a spare Pz.IV, I can always get some WWII Productions tracks for it if I ever decide to build it.

Unless that would work, trying the WWII Productions resin tracks? Have to be more careful about the mods given the resin but that might be an option, it might also be easier to get some spare links on special order to make up the shortfall.
