It was a Frankenpen. It had a cartoon head of Frankenstein where the eraser should go. They were giving these out as trinkets at the screening I attended.
Regarding how she obtained the pen. Remember that the boys were sleeping. She probably either grabbed it when she went to the bathroom or perhaps when she returned.
