Road trip, advice for going through states...

Hey guys, im going home in a few weeks and i have decided to drive the mustang. the only thing i havent decided on yet is what rout im going. if you go on google maps and type in borden ontario you will get to where i am now and if you type in brandon manitoba, thats where i want to go. now, there are 3 ways to get there by road, one (going through detroit) i have decided not to use (probibaly lots of traffic) however i can go north around lake superior (the way i came last time) or i can go through the states, more specificley minasota and north dakota from sault st marie.

If i go through minasota and north dakota i will be crossing the border in sault st marie. My real question here is are there any reasons not to cross the border south? up north in most spots theres alot of noting for a long way and even less to help you of shit goes down, as well the speed limit is only 90kmh (55mph) and the cops are cracking down hard on speeding... it may be worht wile to go south of the border because the gas is cheeper and the dollars are almost par...

how are the roads in Min and ND? how are the cops (just incase), how are the drivers and whats the speed limit?

One more thing, would there be anyone along the way if i went south???

Well Ed, if you come through Sault Ste. Marie, you'll end up going through the U.P. of Michigan, nothern Wisconsin, upper Minn and N.D. And your right, all thats up there, for the most part are forests.
I personally wouldnt worry about breaking down in the U.P. and needing help. In all my years traveling up there, from one end of the U.P. to the other, all Ive ever found are great people, who will go out of their way to help you.
If you go that way, you'll probably drive M 28 through Michigan. I dont remember the speed limit 60, maybe 65, but theres hardly any police up there and you can haul some ass, watch out for the deer though, their all over the U.P. and northern Wi.
Personally, I would much rather break down up there than driving the southern route.
I also wouldnt go the same way I came. Your only young once so have an adventure.
I cant help you with any info on Minn or N.D. Ive only been through the northern parts of those states once.
let us know which way your going so we can give the police a heads up

As you pass through Sault Ste Marie be sure to stop on the Michigan side to check out the locks and the USS Valley Camp. Kinda neat stuff.

My experience in driving in northern Michigan, especially at night, is that even though the roads are two lane a lot of people drive them like a divided 4 lane highway. That is the faster traffic runs the left lane.....for a LONG way sometimes.

The roads that I drove on were straight and at night you can see headlights coming for miles.

Back around 1992 I was running north on I-75 going to the St Ignace car show with the 66 Fairlane 289. We were pretty far north and there was a wreck that closed the road. It took a while for them to clear it, but I was one of the first cars through. The road was empty in front of me as far as I could see. So I ran it up to about 100 and just cruised for miles.

On the way home I was going about 85 when the national speed limit was still 55. Cruised past a radar cop sitting in the median, he looked up, shook his finger, and went back to his crossword puzzle.

Of course, that was a LONG time ago.......

Crossing the border

I'm in London Ontario and any time I go to Michigan I go over at Port Huron. Shorter lines and the border guards don't snarl at you.

Travelling through the states

When I moved back to BC from Ottawa, we crossed at Sarnia. We came through the northern US and found it a much nicer drive than the north shore of Lake Superior. Amenities were much better on the US side.

I was born in Brandon (grew up in Selkirk, though)
