Welcome!

I just sold my 64 Galaxie XL last fall. I also sold off another 64 500 hardtop & a 63 XL convert stripped down body & chassis. The XL was originally a 390/4 speed, but had a 460/C6 swap in it. I built it as a lightweight clone, it had the teardrop hood, fiberglass fenders, and fiberglass bumpers.

Right now I don't even have a hot rod to speak of, unless my Shelby Daytona counts. I thinned out the herd of cars, and all I've got left is the Dodge, an F-250 diesel, a couple suicide door Lincolns, and a couple parts car remnants.

'06 Mustang GT owner here as well. Work in progress is a 69 Cyclone Spoiler 2. Great place to hang out. No high maintenance folks around here, except maybe Chuck. He's the one sitting on cruthes, so he may be a little grumpy...

Love my Mustang, sure don't see many '69 Cyclone,s even in '69.
My Galaxie is also a 'lightweight clone' it seems like it's almost identical to yours Jeremy. Didn't start out that way but a garage fire got me thinking. I'm supposed to pick it up today, after 10 months and 2 days?!! Am interested in finding a little more about yours.
Thanks for the input guys.

Re: feeling welcome

July 25 2007, 2:31 PM

My Galaxie ended up a lightweight clone due to a fire also. I had a large shop/house 10 years ago, and there was a massive fire that claimed my original drivetrain, most of the trim & interior, my 65 Lincoln, almost all my other car parts, and pretty much everything we owned at the time. Luckily I'd pushed the Galaxie itself outside a few days before along with my Daytona C/S or I would have lost those as well. I had several other vehicles that were stored outside, so I didn't lose my entire car collection.

The fire was purposely set, BTW, and no one was ever prosecuted for it. I followed several several leads and pretty much know who did it.. as in the guy walked up to me & basically told me to my face that he did it.. but the local law enforcement didn't care. He'd broke into my place previously & had stolen a few parts & wasn't charged for that either. He also did time for grand theft auto, and had come by my place trying to sell stolen parts to me & some friends which is partly what got him locked away for a while.

Any ways. I sold mine last fall after my father passed away. It still needed exterior paintwork & a few little odds & ends, but I just didn't have the interest anymore. I still have a small handful of cars stored, and I plan on building one someday if I ever get the time & money.

Far as Chuck goes, the guy just needs some attention.

And who the hell is this Mark L character anyway??

PS...I lost my 66 Fairlane to some fella in Minnesota last year, so I'm kinda spongin' off anybody in my path. Hope ya don't mind a little drool now and then.

July 25 2007, 9:26 PM

My Galaxie 500 XL is pretty nice, it's Cayman [turquoise]. The frame is really solid as well as the undercarriage. The body is very nice especially since it was painted, got it back today after 10 months, they got it 9-25-06, they're slow but do excellent work. Has a '70 429 thunderjet mild cam 780/Edelbrock stock heads 2 1/4" SS exhaust (super restrictive), C6, 3.00 gears. Have a 460 comp cams 292H, stealth w/800 DP, dove-c's ported polished w/2.25/1.72 valves, crites headers, C6 w/shift kit, 2500 stall conv 3L50 gears, mosier axles, plan on a 3" exhaust ought to flow pretty good.
They suggested the fiberglass hood, said the insurance company said ok because the paint on the stock hood was so damaged [it was painted underneath, too]. So I paid the extra for the rest of the fglass.
'06 Mustang GT Tungsten w/ 2-10" dk gray stripes, shelby side stripes [painted not tape], seguencing tail lights.
Sorry about your loss Jeremy, anonymous: hope you didn't lose it on pinks, Wildo: sure is hard to concentrate with that flashing above your name haha.
Later on guys.

Hey Terry,

I've been busy or I'd have said Hi sooner. I've got a solid '64 Ford Custom Tudor 'rat rod' still powered by the original 223 6. My daily driver is an '88 Lincoln MK VII LSC, I've got a couple of '79 Thunderbirds, one with a very mild 302,  and of course the requisite F-150 pickemup. But my first love is circle trackers. I've got a '70s vintage Gremlin bodied east coast dirt modified and just bought a 'modern' DIRT Modified this week that should be on the track with 2-3 weeks. Neither are Ford powered but oh well... BTW, I forgot to mention that I'm a 56 year old broad.

Greg,
WOW, what a wheelie, Sure hope you will let me know a little about your setup. The '63 1/2 FB is very close to the '64 FB on my favorite Galaxie list. I'm just hoping mine can pull the left front wheel a little after it is done.

Terry, this link should go to an article in Mustang and Fords magazine.

The engine is now a 545. There is some conflicting info in the article. The heads are 429CJ aluminum and it's a solid roller. Everything else SHOULD be pretty close.

Thanks Greg, I printed out the article. Had to have that one.
A couple of months ago I was planning a 521/545 build for my '64 XL but bought a 'decent' 460 from bbfstanger off the 460Ford forum [thanks again bbfs] A month earlier got a set of maxxed out dove-c's [ronzos a great guy, too]. I realize I'm not going to have near the power, but I'm retired and I couldn't pass it up. Besides I'm old and just a little 12 second excitement in my life will be good enough.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: new to forum

July 30 2007, 9:46 PM

A 460 Galaxie shouldn't have much problem getting into the high 12s.

You mentioned a 292 Magnum cam, so just for comparative purposes I'll run my 66 Fairlane combo past you.......

472 C.I. .060" over.

Home Ported D0VE-C heads with CJ exhaust valves.

Compression 10:1 + -.

Comp 292H Magnum Kit.

Torker II Intake to fit under stock steel hood.

850 DP.

Crites 2" headers.

C-4 with shift kit.

3500 stall.

4:11 Detroit Locker.

9x28 slicks.

The car was a 289 stick. I plugged in the 460 C-4 combo but I didn't do any other mods. It's a full weight bone stock body with full original interior. In other words it's a "classic muscle car" NOT a drag car.

NO subframe connectors etc......

The only chassis mods were 90/10 shocks up front, remove swaybar, and a pair of El Cheapo Lakewood "Clip-On" slapper bars.

Later on I added a 427 'Glass hood with a ram air plate.

This combo went a best of 11.48 @ 118 mph.

So figure some extra weight for the Galaxie and add about 2/10ths for the C-6 vs C-4 and I'd say you're good for a high 12 if you set it up right.

Thanks a lot Greg,
I'm hoping I'll be able to improve on my reaction time after a few passes, I'm sure it will be pretty slow to begin with I'll be 60 Dec. 7. I have a couple of 'Ford powered' friends who are going to help me. With the advise I have received and will receive from this forum and the 460Ford forum I'm really anxious, to say the least, about getting started on my Galaxie conversion. It ought to be complete [God willing] by April when the UFO's rent a small strip in north central Ohio for their club members and friends for the 1/8 mile. It'll be a good place to start.
Great forum, thanks again.

Greg, according to my math you're only 58, youngster?!! I haven't raced since the mid '70's so I figure it'll take me a little while to get used to the tree. 70, man that guy is my hero!

Doug F F F,
yep Pacemakers Mt. Vernon, Ohio, we used to go there just for a change from National Trails and Hyde Park. I remember when they closed Hyde Park because the shut down was too short. As the cars got faster the 'shut down hill' wasn't enough and a few cars ran past it into the neighbors field [that sure wasn't my problem] haha. And then they shut down Pacemakers for about the same reason. 1/8th mile was almost unheard of back then. The funny thing is it still looks about the same as it did in the 60's and 70's [only 1/8mile] except they did add a new tower which they're really proud of. It's almost like going back in time. It's kind of neat though, until this past spring I hadn't been there in 30 years. The track owner seemed very nice though, like he really appreiciated us being there. The UFO's [United Ford Owners] are planning another 'event' in the fall, they usually have two a year. Not too many people showed up but it was still a good time.
Do you live close to it? I live in Lancaster now. I lived in Zanesville then.
Talk to you guys later!
