Finally got the new motor running

And it hauls butt, for me anyway. Gotta learn to drive again. The new converter is tons different than the old TCI. It flashes to about 4200, then on the shifts the car falls back to about 5200 and hangs for a second until the car catches up. I say about because it move so fast I need a few more passes to get used to it. 1-2 shift first pass was about 6500, 2nd 7000, 3rd 6800 with the target being 6500 on each - not my normal skill level. With the cap off the manifold vacuum port (forgot to plug it after removing the vacuum gauge), a loose throttle linkage at the carb and missed shift points, the car ran smooth. I bumped the timing 2 degrees from 34 to 36 because the car was loading up a bit in gear after the second pass. I didn't think about the missing vacuum cap until I got home, so that's likely what that was about. I bought a new Craftsman dial back timing light at Sears because my old Craftsman light couldn't read the timing very well. I guess it was tired after 33 years in service, the new one is a killer tool. Oh, and this is with the old 650DP on the car, jetted fat at 68/78.

All laps at baro 28.05, 84F, 47% RH - DA 4030'
Staging at 2000
Run - 60' - ET/MPH
7:32pm - 1.663 - 7.444/91.71
7:57pm - 1.668 - 7.433/92.29
8:15pm - 1.663 - 7.418/92.38 - timing +2

Compare old 2V motor
1.78 - 7.90/87

That works out to nearly 400HP at the back wheels. Not bad for old tech LOL. Good thing I put in a cage, my belts are up to date and I own a SFI 3.2A-1 jacket. Wasn't expecting 7.40s. In Dallas it might run 7.20s at Dallas.

Combo

September 24 2007, 10:51 AM

355 (.030 over) 351C block, Melling HV pump, Milodon 8 qt pan, stock length H beam rods, Probe flat tops, stock cast crank, 4V iron heads with 65 cc chambers (compression 10.5:1 exactly), Ferrea stainless valves and Parker port tongues, Crane 238/248 .554/.577 lift solid cam set at +1 advanced, Harland Sharp rockers, Manley 3/8 pushrods and guide plates, .022 lash, Parker 4V Funnelweb, ancient 650DP, MSD dizzy locked at 36. Trans is a home built C4 with 5 clutch reverse/high and carbon band, reverse manual body, H servo, Art Carr "4200" stall converter, 4.56 gear, 28-10.5x15 MTs. Car weighs about 3350 loaded - it weighed 3000 before the cage and frame connectors, plus my 200 lb butt. 91 octane unleaded in the fuel cell.

I was expecting 7.60s out of the setup because it's nothing fancy, just a regular Cleveland "catalog" build with shelf parts. Muy suprised at the runs. If the air is good in Ennis in 2 weeks, it might run 7.20s. Pretty quick for an old beat up 4 door.

Video

Wife hates video cameras - To get her to use it I might have to do something reckless, like swear not to buy car parts for a month or so. I'll try, I wanna see too.

Now with crappy video

September 29 2007, 1:52 AM

Only had the small camera. Ran 650DP once for a 7.41 pass, then tried the new homebrew 750DP. Gave up on the 750DP after 7 test passes, put the 650 back on - 1.63 60', 7.293 @ 93.73 Looked fast from the seat.

Looks fast

Feels fast from the front seat too. Red light: -.002 on that pass. Leaves a little quicker than the old one. That's my excuse, anyway.
