Almost lost a good friend the other day. Thankfully we met up tonight at cruise night as usual and put back a few cold ones.

Good lord, that scares the hell outta me. My 3 yr old daughter's baby seat would've been right in the worst spot possible in that accident. Dare I ask what happened? It looks like it got rearended on an angle by a Mac truck that climbed up over the top of it!

Well I'll start by saying my buddy is... Was a driving instructor (notice the brake pedal on passenger side). Young girl driving the car. They stopped at an intersection because there was someone turning left and not enough room to get around them. My buddy said he checked his mirror and all he saw was truck.

Apparently there was another car behind him that took the blow first. Truck (big rig hauling an unloaded flat bed) hit the car behind him, that car smashed into his car and went somewhere out of the picture, then the truck hit his car into the car ahead of him. At which point my buddys car spun around into the oncoming traffic lane and he was a few feet from being t-boned right where he sat (passenger seat).

Truck driver admitted fault. Said he expected the folks ahead of him to keep going.

Bonus points to anyone who can figure out what type of car it was.

car guess

I orginally guess a corolla, but car's too big for that. Possibly a Camry. Interior looks Japanese. He's a lucky fella, no question about it.

I think the girl might just drop out of drivers ed and choose to not drive for a couple years?

Man that car just folded up.

I am happy to hear everyone was ok. I have three daughters, and one or two of them would have been killed in that. I would likely have gone to jail after commiting another killing at that point. I almost decided to go into truck driving. I have driven a rig on the road. The thing that struck me most was how much responsibility I would shoulder for the safety of the other motorist. The other vehicles look like insects from the windshield of a rig. The cab of one of them is no place to allow one's attention to slip. Remember also each time you get in proximity to a rig that the drivers are cut from the same cross-section of humanity as any other occupation. Most are safe, but some are actively reckless.

What a mess - glad to hear your buddy is okay!  I don't have a vote yet, but Ethan (my son) is saying Chevy Malibu, and Lisa is betting Corolla.  Something about those slab sides and the molding has me thinking Ethan is on to something with the American car?

Malibu was a close guess I suppose. My buddy has a Malibu for his own daily driver and when he sent me the pics I first thought it was his, only realized it was the driving school car once I saw the pedal on the passenger side. But anyway...

The mystery car is a Hyundai Elantra. For a compact car I guess it fared well for a low speed impact with an unloaded big rig, but I sure feel safer driving large cars and trucks, especially for passengers.

I've only ever seen one car worse than this. It was in a junkyard and I don't know the story, but that car was a Saturn. It looked like it had been hit by a train... Repeatedly. Looking in the car the passenger was definitely killed. I hope there weren't any people in the back because the whole back was crushed right up to pushing on the frot seats. The whole front clip was compacted right into the passenger seat area. I'd bet the driver survived though, because it was like a perfect bubble around the drivers seat.
