62 Galaxie - gets some paint

Finally got some paint on the 62 . It turned out really nice and should look pretty good with the black frame that gets installed next. Hopefully next weekend I can get some of the frame and on the ground shots. After that the cage gets fitted thats why I opted to not paint the outer body just in case I should scratch something.

Looks very clean, and the color is a nice change of pace.

Looks like you've been busy with the hole saw on the doors. You trying to get it down below 3600 or so?

Looks really sharp! I have a question on the green car. Ever dyno the engine? How big is it?

Rick the Green car is 598 inches and has a tunnel ram with 2 1150's and a powerglide. The car weighs 3906 with driver and this engine has never been dynoed but the exact twin to it with our tunnel ram and carbs made 1148HP and 896 torque. We let Bobby Small use our setup, only difference between our engine and his is the Aluminum block in ours.

Best ET to date is 9.21 with a toasted high gear in the transmission.

Chilly I am shooting for 3300lbs. Have everything that was evermade in fiberglass for it ( hood, bumpers, bumper brackets, fenders, inner fenders, and a NOS factory lightweight deck lid ) I am still planning on running a full interior and I may try this new scratch proof lexan if I can get it in the factory tracks to make it roll up and down. Oh yeah, the interior will have a metal dash and complete red for the interior color. I also am planning on painting the inlay on the side stainless red too for some contrast. I can honestly say i have never seen a Silver 62 before.

Re: RE: 62 Galaxie gets some paint

No real finish date scheduled. Once I get it back on the frame and the suspension installed to where it will be rolling, I have a ton of stuff to do as well as buy for the car. I have been funding this car with side money that I make off of other peoples projects plus I have been buying as much used peices that I can for this project. I have all the moly tubing for the cage purchased, as well a all the rear suspension and center section, and rearend. Only thing need for the interior is seats and to have the door panels re-upolsterd. I need front brakes, all the trim re-annodized, and a complete weatherstrippng kit for the entire car. I have the wheels and tires, engine , but no transmission. I ordered all the front suspension stuff a while ago but it has yet to all come. I laso have a wife and 3 girls under the age of 5 who also factor into the project timing like anything else.

Thanks for the compliments guys. As far as raising the bar, i really haven't, Just found a super nice car that was worthy of a frame off which made my decision super easy.

When I was searching for a 62 I looked at some real junkers, and even got so tired of looking at then I also broadened my search to include a nice Maverick. I even contemplated diong a tube chassis car and putting the 62 body over on it or even the maverick the same way. Thats how junky the floors and such were in the cars I was looking at. Once I scored this car about 8 months later I realized that I was not going to cut this one up to much, and the rest is history.

Oftentimes when I take my 63 Ford to the track someone will come over and give me a bunch of stuff about how I shouldn't be racing "such a nice car" and "ruining" it, etc......

What do think they are gonna say when you show up with this thing????

Anyway, silver was a factory color although it wasn't very popular in those years. Unless you kept wax on it the old Ford enamel would go dull and you'd have a dull grey car. It would come back with a polish but it took time and effort.

"Q" was the original silver color code.

61-62 Ford Silver Grey Poly
61-62 Merc Sheffield Grey Poly

1962 Ford Full Size Cars were available in 13 Diamond Lustre Enamels. There were up to 24 different two-tone combinations available for a total of 37 possibilities that your car wouldn't be just like your neighbors.

Come to think of it, you don't see a lot of silver cars pre '65 of any make, as far as I can tell. Should be a nice combo on the '62. It will look just like the Hindenburg...

Never thought about that. (LOL) I could do with out the fire, so we will let the interior simulate that.

Eric, The silver is off of the new 08 dodge and Chryslers. I think it is called Bright Silver Metalic B/C . Not positive on the name but am sure of the year . Dodge only offers one silver in 08 on all thier models.

Greg, I did not realize that silver was option in 62. I have always been a fan of silver, but again it has to be on the right car.

You guy's probably would not have liked my second color .......... I was looking at the Lime Gold off of the Shelby Mustangs in 68-69 with the Ivy gold interior.

Travis,
All of that looks like brand new sheet metal (except the holey inner door skins) what was the process to get it to that shape? Was it dipped and stripped? Media blasted? Whatever it was it sure looks brand new in the pics.

Looks great. Nice job!

The first silver car I recall from my youth was a '50's GM showcar (Firebird?). I remember Sebring Silver on the then new '63 Corvette Stingrays as well. Metallics just didn't hold up well until clear coats were perfected. The water based metallics of the late 70's and early '80's just peeled off! My father-in-law's '78 T-Bird looked great for about 3 years then got dull then peeled.
