My night in the ER

Well still here with all my fingers and toes, but had quite a scare last night!  We're redoing our kitchen and i did the tear out this weekend.  I was cutting the wire mesh & plaster along one of the outside brick walls with a carbon blade in an electric angle grinder to get a straight clean line to butt up against some new drywall when I had a brief lapse in caution and took my left hand off the tool to pull some of the material back and it kicked right into my wrist, through the glove, skin, veins, nerves and three tendons.  I'm pretty messed up, but they think i'll make a full recovery after they do more surgery later this week.  Scary as hell when it happened though, that cut was DEEP!  Stupid, stupid, stupid - I know better than to get careless with that nasty tool but was working too fast so that i could get it all done by dinner - what a damn fool!

Jeez!!!

I am happy you are alive and kicking this morning. Any type of power tool can be that dangerous. I have been lucky thus far, but all it takes is a seconds lapse of attention. I guess we are all guilty of it, I know I have been. Get well Eric. I suggest getting Dr. Chuck and Dr. Cook there to help.

OMG! I am sure glad that you only got hurt, not mamed or even dead. I mean, if no one else was there, you pass out from shock, pretty nasty bleed, DAMN! Thank God your Guardian Angel was ON DUTY! Here's to a quick and full recovery. No need to ever tell you to be careful with tools again is there?
I mean, if we did not know you, we would be saying stuff like what a dumb A$$. But we do know you and hope you get well soon.

Damn, glad to hear you're OK. Been doing a lot of demo around here, so I know the fear of a simple oversight. Glad everything is still attached.

Well Crap! Hope everything comes back!

The other night 545Mikey came over to help me with a plumbing project. We were taking out the old 4" cast iron soil pipe. This required several overhead cuts with a diamond bladed sawzall and that stuff is tough. He was sawing and I was holding. The whole time I was thinking that if that blade breaks or he slips I am SO screwed!

But we made it!

Get better soon!

"I mean, if we did not know you, we would be saying stuff like what a dumb A$$. But we do know you and hope you get well soon."

Well, unfortunately my friends and family call me a dumb-a$$ all the time!

I let myself go into the kitchen to check it out a few minutes ago and it looks like something out of a horror movie in there - there's blood spatter on the walls and everything!  The wood floor is all cut up though from the thing running around on the floor aftere I dropped it.  I remember picking it up and trying to shut it off and realizing i couldn't move my thumb to do it, and knew i'd really meessed up!.

Anyway, I go in for surgery on Wednesday morning to hook everything back up in there, so everything should be fine.  Thanks for all the kind words from everyone - it really made my day!

Sorry to hear about your injury, I hope you heal well and fast.

A friend of mine got injured by one of those a few years ago. He said he had just installed a new A-C unit at his house (he's a licensed A-C & refridgeration mechanic) and was cutting up his old outside condenser unit, holding the grinder with one hand and the work with his other hand when the tool kicked back and went right up his arm leaving a nasty 10" long gash.

I'm just glad that you'll be ok, Eric.... As to dumbazzed moves, I'll run a bunch of mine by you that will make the construction miscue seem absolutely sensible in a few days.

I tried to go into the office this morning, but i just couldn't handle all the chaos and damn questions!  Luckily Lisa came in with me to help me get situated and we ran into my boss first thing . . . after 5 minutes of talking to her he had me boxed up with orders to stay home "as long as I need."  She's a charmer for sure - another 5 minutes with him i think she'd have gotten me a promotion and the corner office!

Boy I'm bored though - i feel like Jimmy Stewart in Rear Window!

Night in the ER

March 25 2008, 9:12 PM

Hey Eric:
Sorry to hear of the "accident" it made me woozy just reading it. Damn, you are not that different from most of any of the rest of us, just a bit unlucky that the grinder bound at the wrong time.
My nephew stuck his hand through a plate glass window and severed everything between his skin and the underside of his forearm. They did microsurgery to reattach everything and he regained full and normal use of his hand. The nerves took the longest to recover, but he did get it all back.
I'm still a bit light headed, I think I need to lie down.
Best of luck,
Paul
