Anyone Been To Boston?

For reasons unbeknownst to me my lovely bride wishes to go to Boston for a vacation.

I can honestly say I'm not too excited about this although two years ago I was not too excited about going to San Francisco and it turned out to be a good time.

So, help me out here......is there anything cool to do in Boston. Not car stuff but general vacation/touristy type stuff.

Lorrie was there a short time ago, I'll ask her. I remember her saying a taxi was the easiest mode of transportation. Somehow she hornswaggled me into going to Newark some time this year, that & Connecticunt

I was there about 20 years ago. Hated it. People were rude, service sucked, and the weather was even worse. I'm sure there's a lot of history to see while there, though. Sorry to rain yer parade...

She said Legal Seafood is a must dine, walk around the area of Paul Revere's stable, & she said she could mail you a brochure she has. Shopping district around Fenway park. Near the Union Oyster House there's a holocaust memorial too.

I was in Boston once for one day four years ago. I took my daughter on a college visit. After we finished the visit, we had a couple of hours so we thought we drive around and see some sights. All we did was get lost. Narrow streets and a spaghetti bowl approach to urban planning left me clueless. I guess I have spent too much of my life in the flatlands of the Midwest. Sorry I can't be any help.

Greg the brouchure I have is also available online.

http://www.trolleytours.com/boston/

I did not take their tour but their maps were very helpful in knowing where I wanted to go.
The deal on the taxi is there is a HUGE fee for any Taxi from the airport and my 10 min ride to the hotel was $67. I was sticker shocked. My co-workers had the rental car we shared so getting around town was easy.

The scary thing about Boston while I was there was a news story about how bad and unsafe all their bridges are. I'm real real bad about remembering numbers but I can convey the point they were making.
80% of the bridges in boston were federally rated as absolutely unsafe. The bridge that collapsed in Minnasota was rated a 400 ... 800 requires closure. These bridges in Boston rated 680 as an average.

The U.S.S Constitution, Boston Tea Party, Chappaquidick, The Kennedy family prolly has stuff to see. I hear the new bridge and tunnell project in the downtown area is an engineering marvel. Prolly way to much to do and not enuf time.

i grew up in boston. it's a great city. just remember if you drive there normal traffic rules do not apply

if you like science go to the boston museum of science, it's awesome. the boston aquarium is great also. check out quincy market. if you have a sick mind like me, you can go to fall river and stay in lizzy bordens (real)house. it's a bed and breakfast. boston is a big city with lots of history and plenty to do, you won't get bored.

Well, I've been there a few times for business and pleasure and the area around Fanueil Hall, Old North Church and the harbor are pretty cool. I spent some time in the Cambridge area where my niece went to college and it was a bit livelier.

Coming from Gettysburg, I imagine you have seen you're share of old buildings, but Boston's are 50-100 years older!

It is true that the city is expensive. I assume you are driving in, but if you aren't you might want to consider flying into Providence, RI and driving up to avoid Logan altogether. They gotta pay for that "Big Dig" tunnel somehow.

I sssume your wife wants to visit the historical stuff mostly, so a tour might be the best way. The traffic just sucks so bad to be unbelievable and you will be paying about $5 a gallon by then.

Have a great trip!

You can go to the Baaaaa...

May 21 2008, 7:38 AM

...and have a beer whilst hearing the word "faaaack" uttered seven million times. Perhaps I was not there long enough to get a true appreciation for the people - but they struck me as a really weird combination of super-vulgar ghetto scum who had somehow maintained a super-arrogant elitism..

There is lots of cool history there though - probably more there than about any other place in this country.

When I hear the name Boston I think of the song as Doug did. I only knew one person from there and she was a character. Just call it a Caw and you'll fit right in. LOL

You could check out www.roadsideamerica.com and see what they have. I check out the site when ever we or relatives are going somewhere and see what off the beaten path things there are to see. My dad and stepmom went to Ben & Jerrys ice cream place and there was nothing telling them where the ice cream flavors cemetary was but i saw it on that site and they were able to find it. Said it was kinda neat to see. That's for the people that like the oddball things to look at and not just the major tourist attractions.
