I Need An Electronics Expert

PLEASE READ THE FULL POST!

I installed the 45 rpm RCA Victor Hiway HiFi in the 60 Plymouth. It works perfectly............

Until you start the engine. Then the increased voltage of the charging system makes it go a little wacky. It will speed up and slow down erratically. Shut off the engine and go back to battery voltage and it's just fine.

Okay, I popped the hood and hooked up my voltmeter expecting a pulsing voltage regulator or other charging system irregularity. The meter was rock solid on 13.5 V.

I checked right at the terminal of the record player. Still a steady reading.

To eliminate the car as the problem I parked my 04 F150 next to it. I jumpered negative battery post to negative battery post. I unhooked the record player lead from the Plymouth. I then ran a test lead to the positive battery post of my truck and hooked it to the record player input lead.

The record player now thinks it's in my truck.

I ran the record player and it works perfectly. Then I started the truck. Same exact thing. Speeds up, slows down...........so it's not the car that's causing the trouble.

Apparently it doesn't like more than 12 volts or whatever the battery voltage is. Increase the voltage it goes wacky.

Okay, here's where the electronics experts come in. Is there a capacitor or a resistor or something I can put in line at the power lead to stabilize this thing at 12V? Maybe it will even be okay at less than 12V, most of this stuff will work at 10V or so.

Well, I'm no expert but we did one in a '55 Chevy a LONG time ago, here's what we did. After scouring all over looking for help we wound up at Radio Shack, back before they were an electronics retailer. They sold us a capacitor that kept the voltage steady, it was better but not perfect. That's all I know for sure. Ended up with a 110V running on a power inverter to get it right... he spent a big wad for that silly thing

If you didn't build it, it will always be someone else's

Hmmm, this is an LED application for an Audi, however the principal seems the same.

The third, fourth and sixth post from the top.

I hope this helps.

Thanks guys, but I think it might be fixed.

When I hooked it up to the truck it really spun up fast. The record player guy told me that the motor has centrifugal points sorta like a governor.

I hooked it back up to the car and it seems okay. I guess the extra rpm zap from the modern truck "unstuck" (or whatever) the points or whatever was causing the problem.

Seems okay now.

I hope Chuck read this. Otherwise, next time he had to fix the turntable in his Galaxie, he'd be taking it completely out, running a full diagnostic scan after cutting off both thumbs, and then re-installing it upside down....

If you cannot fix it and the points in the player continue to get stuck all you need is a Rheostat inline between teh + and the player. That will eliminate the speed surges.

Right after I unhooked it from the truck I took a short break. What to do.....what to do......

Then I remembered the old 270* sweep rheostats from the old train layout in the pre DCC days. I dug one out and put it in line.

Started out real slow......"Wwwhhheeeennnnnn Llliiibbbbeeeerrrrttttyyy Vvvaaaalllllaaaannnccce Cccccaaaaaammmmmme Ttttoooooo Ttttttoooooooowwwwwwnnnn Ttthhheeeee Wwwwwoooommmmmeeeeennnnn Ffffooooooolllllllkkk Wwwwwwooooooouuuuuulllllldddddd Hhhhhhiiiiddddde..........."

I gradually speeded it up getting ready to cut it back when it got wacky. But it didn't! So it was either the real slow or the real fast that fixed it. I'm guessing it was the real fast "chipmunks" run that freed it up.

The good news is that the guy was coming to pick it up today but now he can't make it. I guess I'll just have to road test it for a few more weeks to make sure everything is okay.....

It's a sweet ride. Cool summer evening, windows down, cool tunes in the box!

THat's odd. It should have leeled off any spikes to the drive motor through th points...

Maybe open it up and inspect the drive surfaces for grease or oil?
