Somehow on Friday night my desktop computer got infected with a virus called Antivirus XP 2008. It looks just like a Microsoft update and tells you it need to install an update to the Microsoft Antivirus software.
Well, once it get's in the door, it shuts off any antivirus software and corrupts the operating system.
I have tried a number of virus detection software but I'm still having some issues. Anytime I try to access any other virus protection software, it redirects you to another internet site.
My question is, have any of you had to deal with this nasty critter and if so, how do you kill it?
My son thinks we are at the point of reloading the XP operating system to get the thing cleaned out.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. BTW, I'm glad I bought the laptop for travel so at least I can still work and access the net.
What is your exact problem let me know and Ill try to help, I know how to fix stuff its just there is no FIX all thing for computers each issue is different and I have only dealt with so many ya know?
Find someone that has a computer with antivirus software on it. (Good antivirus and anti spyware that is up to date. Take your hard drive out of your machine. Hook it to theirs as a slave and have the drive scanned and cleaned. Then put it back in yours, boot it and see if that does it. If not, save what you can to another disk, start over with xp and antivirus/spyware and scan what you have saved..... I had a variation of this one and I bought a new drive and installed xp and PC Tools spyware doctor w/ antivirus. This particular infection is a real pain.
Sorry about both your computer woes, May I say that I've not ahd a virus since the Bugbear virus of 2002 that my son uploaded and clicked OK on.
I run Spybot search and destroy 1.5.2 and have never had another intrusion... The newer Spybot actually run's parallel to any anti virus system you use (mine is currently out of date about 9 months) but the spybot detects ANY change in your registry values adn gives you the warning and only you can authorize or deny the registry change which is what 99% of all spyprograms adn a lot of viruses try to do.
I also run AdAware shareware remover every month.
They are only minutes to download and takes less than 20 minutes to do a FULL system scan of every single part of the computer.
You have a motor and its got no oil it in and you burn up a bearing the damage is done, putting oil it in now wont do much good, at least thats how I look at it usually these programs wont get in but if they do and you and a program after they get in it can cause problems.
But try a system restore if you need help with it give me a call 702 92seven 1358
install avast 4 home. update it. then in the program menu run select "pre-boot scan" and let it run. and select repair and if it cannot select "move item to chest".
Restart your computer in safe mode, (restart and press F8 a few times a safe mode menu will come up) use your arrow keys to scroll to safemode with networking.
Get on the internet and search for Trend Micro Housecall and run that, it will do an online virus cleaning you may have to do it a couple of times, this is free, then restart and run all your software, antivirus, spyware etc. this is a pretty decent free antivirus program as well http://free.avg.com/
This should work if not you may have to reload windows just make sure you do a full format not a repair. Good Luck
i doubt its anyones fault but the guy who made the virus, probibaly attached to the thing i downloaded.
my problem is even in the metal shop with hammers, shears, breaks, saws, rivets, airplane stuff and so on, im the one who gets called the "Knuckle Dragger"...
I'll try to keep my problem a little less animated than Ed's...
I tried to do a system restore, no luck, virus killed off all restore points from one hour after infection and back. No luck there.
I tried to load avast and every time you try to connect to any antivirus site, the thing redirects the search. I downloaded a copy from the net to my laptop, copied to flash drive, and installed on infected computer.
Avast found and isolate the bugs. Thought all was fine until I tried to connect avast to internet to verify latest database, then it redirects off to no man's land.
Ran avast on laptop. No viruses found. Copied all important files and pictures to portable hard drive and reran avast again. Portable hard drive shows clean.
Sent wife to OfficeMax to get copy of Norton Antivirus 2008. IT guy here at work said this should fix the problem......
Restarted computer in safe mode, ran webroot anti virus and my computer turned its self off half way though...
I called a buddy and im useing his portable hard to copy all my important stuff. if the computer goes for a crap i can load everything if i can find the cd's again (i know there in a box somewhere)
Jerry, save your money on norton. Just re-install xp. Avast is all I run, and every pc that has come to me for repairs has it also. I do not get return customers. Not that I charge anyone anything. I want to at times though. Some of the pc's I have fixed/corrected have had some messed up shit on them.
Look at this:
go to user accounts in control panel. Make sure you do not have a "extra account" open. If there is an extra account that you do not know about delete that baby.
Another thing to do, Which is to me the VERY best thing to do.
-right click your task bar and select "task manager".
-Once thats open select the "processes" tab.
-then click "user name" til your admin's processes are lined up at the top. (this puts everything in order by name example system, network, local, admin etc..) dont forget to show processes from all users btw.
Write down all of the processes under your admin account. and search online for a definition of all of them. example "rundll32.exe" or "explorer.exe". this way you can pinpoint the issue ( in this case a program running in the background) and work to resolve it. Chances are you can go to add/remove programs and uninstall it. Or you can search for the location of the item with the windows search.
Alot of the time, While searching file names on google, People have tips on how to get rid of a given program.
Finally back up and running. Managed to salvage all pictures and email but forgot to save my internet bookmarks. Those can be rebuilt over time I suppose.
Had to reinstall XP and start from scratch. Got everything updated and running late last night.
