And now for something slightly less controversial...

While Chuck is off taking his bloodpressure meds and nanook of the north is off going to another ac/dc concert or finding some more jade, maybe y'all can help me with something.

Since my move I'm gonna need a new computer security package. What are y'all using with good results? The last Mcafee I used bogged my 'puter down so bad I swore I'd never own another.

What say ye?

I have PCTOOLS Antispyware w/Antivirus. It works well, but if it is doing a scan, don't count on doing anything useful with the computer.

AVG is probably less intrusive than many of them. I use it on some machines

I use AVG now too and it's ok I suppose. Never got an alert from them though telling me I've got something, but I did have issues with her that I doscovered came from adware crap that got past it... So I recommend AVG but run Spybot weekly to help it out.

I have McAfee right now & it's slow as old STP. I always used Symantec. It scans really fast.

Avast 4 Home Edition (free download) all you do is register it. I have been using this for years. And the seven or so PC's that I have fixed for people (who have run AVG, Mcafee, Norton to name a few) simply love it too and none have come back to me for fixing. I wish you could of seen my Ol' ladie's Aunt's machine!!!!

It does a pre-boot scan (you schedule it unless it finds something questionable) so its not constantly scanning everytime you turn your pc on (man do I hate that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Most other anti-virus utilities can't do that. Seriously, Why should it re-scan your drive when its up to snuff? You should run a pre-boot scan once a month due to the updating of the virus database. I do it once every two to three months and it finds one, If it finds anything at all.

Just hit the green "download now" button. wink.gif

Avast antivirus, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware SE, and CCleaner. I install 'em on every computer I build or repair that's running Windows.

That is a good combination

Defense in Depth. The only way to stand a fighting chance against low rent hackers and script-kiddies, pop-ups and Click counters.

I really like Avast! (although, initially I was very fearful of using it. It is from a Former Soviet Union software company. I had visions of installing a 'bot' that would subvert my network. I was real careful for the 1st year - I'm still wary, but so far, so good.

Has anyone heard from Beoweolf lately?  Apparently two heavy-set gentlemen in fur hats and a black sedan stopped by to see him this afternoon, and then he just "disappeared!" The only evidence is the faint smell of vodka and sturgeon roe happy.gif

I have been running the Avast setup for a while and I like it much better than the AVG..The AVG never seemed to find any problems and I didn't like that I couldn't schedule the scans for times when I wasn't on the computer.....I had a funny experience when I first switched to the Avast system..I had been listening to some music so I had the speakers turned up loud on the computer...I went to bed and left the computer turned on...Somewhere about 3am in the morning I was awakened by a very loud siren and a voice saying something along the lines of WARNING........a VIRUS HAS BEEN DETECTED!...Since I was living alone at the time it kinda scared the crap out of me till I realized what it was...lol.happy.gif
