Recycling rant

Back in 1979 I walked a lot and saved aluminum can's to recycle and get money to buy new fishing gear.

The refund amount ias $0.26 per lb, for ALL aluminum can's and foil and whatnot.

Today, 29 years later the price per lb has dropped to $0.22 for less than 25 lbs. $0.24 for less than 100 lbs, and $0.26 for 200+ lbs!

How in the hell can that be? Down in california I guess they charge a CRV on can's and bottles so we get about $1.47 per lb back in July...

Is it just me or does this state NOT want people recycling? This damn place is expensive enough to live in with nearly a 10% state tax and levy's for everything....

The garbace company CHARGES me $12.00 per 3 months to HAVE a recycling trash can in my yard, and they CHARGE me $12.00 per 3 months to NOT have a recycling can! Either way I loose, and the landfill looses...

Not a lot of incentive to recycle here....

I guess I could start loving the earth and recycle because of that and my children's future Etc... But isn't that a little overboard :?

Rant over...

That's the reason I no longer recycle aluminum. We have an older guy close to here on a fixed income & we give it all to him. I figure it's because the Chinese don't need it like they do steel, which is way down. I know our scrap guy is gonna be happy if I don't sell some stuff soon. He'll get to haul it all off & make a little spending change. You still looking for a set of slotted mags?

California is all about the dollar and how to extract it from anyone...

December 11 2008, 12:05 PM

... that won't, can't complain too much or get much sympathy. Raising the Cigarette taxes way out of any reason to discourage smokers (now that more people have quit - they are complaining about the 'lost' revenue), helments on bikers (motor and pedal-power), seat belts (after all its good for you - not to mention those $200 fines and car searches for "other" infractions).

And your and my favorite the CRV refund. the average Joe will never get his full CRV refund. They pretty much reserve that for the recycle companies that collect and refund in bulk. As you mention, if they really were about recycling, they would allow you to return the cans and bottles to the same place you bought it. In the old days, when pop, colas, soda's - whatever you called them - were recycled, kids would clean them up pretty quick. Families would just drop off the old bottles when they bought a new 6-pack. The stores didn't want the hassle or the sanitary problems, so they put that clause in the law, they don't have to accept the recycles. And a new business was born, with new source of tax revenue! With all the smog laws and recent enhancements - they have finally found a way to charge us all for AIR!

Gotta love Cali recycle crap. The CRV fees are a total ripoff to the consumer. We never get it back. Back in about 1998, a neighbor guy who drove a city trash truck, made more than me at the time, said the recycle program which picked up free stuff, didn't pay for the cost of running the program. Alum then was about $.95 a lb.
Leave it to the guvment to run a business w/o any business sence. To quote Donny Baker of the Bob and Tom show, "it's State law!" City's here are required to have a recyling program. Believe the trash they pick up must be 25% recyclable.
Not that I collect cardboard in a shopping cart, but the recycle co's today will take your cardboard, but won't pay you for it. No market for it.

OH YES AND IT'S about to get WORSE! THE LOCAL POPO are the "NEW REVENUE" generators in my fine city...Co worker got a not wearing seat belt ticket while parked,IN an AT&T BUCKET TRUCK.. with his engine ideling, our laptops won't work without the engine ideling...Friend of mine, owns a plating shop pays for Fire Dept. Inspection twice a year...on Monday he was told they found "hazzardous chemicals" at the company and he would have to pay an additional fee for that. And they would get back to him on how many years this fee would be retroactive. AS far as recycling you will never get back the full cost of the CRV as it is used to fund the conversion of old and new refuse trucks to LNG and CNG Technology, not cheap to make a Cummins Diesel run on LNG...To Make any money on recycling you must do as the big boys do here in California. Store the aluminum until the price is higher then sell, Alum is a comodity like fuel oil, cotton seed oil, soybeans ect. Right now the oil companies are renting tankers to "store" crude oil, buying while cheap, storing it ofshore, and will bring it to shore for refining, when the price gets higher. If you are buying and selling you must think like a trader not a recycler. California's General FUND will be bankrupt in FEB 09 as per The "Governator" on Tuesday of this week! MORE FEES..More fines...ect....LAST NITE MY WIFE asked if I thot they would start imposing a fee for Leaving California???? I said I only trusted them as far as I could throw them!!!

Funny thing is ... recycling has caught on too good....

December 11 2008, 3:14 PM

seems I saw an article (one of those 60 minute type shows). Were they exposed the fact that many cities are not recycling cardboard or plastic any more. They are taking it either straight to the dump, along with all the other trash - just like they used to do. Or separating it, bundling it up first, storing it until the ware house if full - then taking it to the dump anyway.

'Course the did this without telling anyone and yes, they still require 'us' to recycle and will fine you if you don't.

Seems that a lot of anxetiy has been stirred up about shipping all our recyclable waste (electronic stuff in particular) to other countries. The rich guys over there will pay to have it shipped over, then burn it, melt down and recover gold from the circuit boards, silver from the solder...and sometimes sell old clothes (which they bought as rags - to be used for making paper, etc) for people to actually wear. Must be where all those AC/DC got to some many places. So now we can't bury trash cause it fills up the land fill too fast, can't ship it over seas cause some bad guy will exploit his own people to make a profit - but its our fault.

I don't think some of these Green Peace yahoos will be happy until everyone is living off home made yogart, bran muffins and riding bicycles. The only jobs will be pencil pushing, growing organic rice and importing stuff (only certified "green" stuff) from overseas - and paying them twice what we are willing to pay a US citizen...after all "they" need the money.

The real wackos are not the issue, it is those who are using the wacko agenda to grab power.

I have to say, I am pretty conservative, but I'd sure like to see the numbers with recycling.

Now, I dont want anyone to dump oil or antifreeze in the woods, or leave plastic in the landfills where it wont decompose, HOWEVER, I would like to see if me separating my cardboard and paper (per Mrs Stang's direct orders) really saves anything or even COSTS us in fuel and pollution.

Re: Recycling rant

I once watched a rather interesting TV show about recycling paper. Quite a process.

As I watched I couldn't help but notice all the machinery involved which I think would have to be consuming quite a bit of electricity. But they were using hrdro-electric power! That's "natural" power. Well, yes, but since the water that comes out of the exhaust is considerably warmer than when it goes in it can kill fish. Oh.

Somewhere in the process they had removed all the old ink from the paper and it was in these big vats. They didn't mention what they do with all that icky old ink. Let it evaporate? Uh-oh! Evaporative emissions! Dump it in the creek? I don't know but there sure was a lot of by-product that was unaccounted for.
