If the means is electric cars / hybrids, then we apparently become dependent on foreign lithium:

Lithium

I can see how these two go together in a big way - "Demand for lithium, long used in small amounts in mood-stabilizing drugs and thermonuclear weapons,..."

We'll just have to suck up to the Bolivians. Get Butch or Sundance on the phone. I had Chinese last night, so I'm good on the foreign gas thing.

After we end our dependence on foreign oil, we'll use all of ours up in short order, then we will be at the complete mercy of the oil producing countries. I say we use up all of theirs while they will still sell it to us.

You can't beat oil. You do little more than pump it up out of the ground... and the amount that will fit in a milk jug will propel the average car 20+ miles. ALL the alternatives aren't nearly as effecient and effective. Once all the government incentives wear off, the alternatives will be FAR more expensive than the oil they replace.
