An interesting mix of ideas...I agree with a number of his points, particularly making Congress live like the rest of us. I take issue with at least two things, however.

He said, "put the election of the president back in the hands of we the people" by abolishing the electoral college. You can't put something back that was a) never there, the electoral college is as old as the presidency; and b) was never taken away, even with the electoral college, we the people still vote and determine a president, just under a different set of rules than a direct, simple majority election. There must be some way of determining who wins. Even a simple election isn't necessarily simple. At the very least, we would have to answer the question, does the winner require a majority, or merely a plurality?

He also said "bring back universal service." When did we ever have universal service? We had a draft, but it never applied to females, so there was never universal service. Universal service is universal tyranny. The concept assumes that only people working for the government are serving others. Actually, everyone that holds down a job serves others. Universal service? How about, get a job! Or, if a man will not work, he must not eat.

To me, I think Neil Boortz's ideas make most sense. People elect US reps directly. Senators are voted in by the state legislatures themselves. There has never been a 'right' to vote in a federal presidential election. I think that a minimal knowledge of the candidates and the issues test ought to be administered before one can vote for president. The endless clips off supporters for one candidate saying that they support the policies of their candidates rivals just get to me. There is nothing racist or wrong with this idea. Elections have consequences. Voting is a tremendous responsibilty. One ought to at least be aware of the candidates stances on the issues.

Then the service bit is as unamerican as can be. We have never had pressed service until it became absolutely necessary...Veitnam excluded. Nam was complicated by vacillating politicians. Fortunately, Iraq has miraculously withstood the 'help' of the politicians.

More alarming to me is the seeming idiocy of the current congress and president. I am including both parties here. So don't anyone be unoffended. Most alarming is that the above are not idiots and know exactly what they are doing and getting exactly the results they desire.
