The winning bid was $28,500? That passes Doug's "Taurus Test" (i.e. anything that costs the same or less than a new Taurus isn't expensive). That does not seem like much for a car that rare and interesting. Supply and demand...
I wonder - seems he has $28,000 worth of "bright work" on that car.

Just guessing; but if you had to start from scratch, replace, re-plate, re-polish every piece of chrome or stainless on that car - how close to the sale price would it be?
4-door hardtop station wagon! Somebody a lot of disposable income in '58.
I woulda figured 50K for a car of that quality. Everytime I see something go for a price like that, I get a funny little feeling inside like "YOU IDIOT, you coulda bought that car...". Then I take a deep breath and remember, "One project at a time..."
It's been a while since I saw one, but it reminds me of the 1961 fully loaded Olds wagon my uncle had. Bought it brand new ad it had about 300k on the clock before it died. Lots of chrome INSIDE too!
"Unrestored" and "All Original" are two very different terms.
Even though this car has been repainted and reupholstered I accept it as "unrestored". It's no longer "all original" but it has never deteriorated to the point that it needed to be disassembled for restoration. It was repaired as necessary over the years to keep it in good condition. It appears that it never had any major disassembly to "bring it back".
A paint job and seat covers don't make a restoration!
These terms are subject to interpretation but I think the claim on this car is legit.
One thing is for sure, I doubt any one other than the guys that go to huge shows will ever see one. I had a '58 in 1976 that was the same color but was hit so hard in the drivers door it wouldn't open. Wasn't worth much back then.

You can't condemn the bad if you don't commend the good
Yeah, I think I know that guy! That car is still local and sees a LOT of road time. The guy wanted to put a 455/THM400 in it but I convinced him that the original 371/Hydro correctly rebuilt would do everything he wanted. 6 or 7 years and many miles later it's still going strong.
why don't they build cool cars like that anymore??
HEY Doug,if you feel to bad for missing out on that deal, you could always buy this.

Wonder when... 1977? {end]
Come on, it's a GM product. The guy may have tried to use it as a daily driver but has only been able to put 10k miles on it in 30+ years. I can relate, my first car was a '61 Chevy. It was a fun car but had to sell it because I couldn't afford the maintenance.
