Re: Friends don't let friends drive foreign

The most telling part of the video were the comments. Ran negative about 2:1 with the usual anti-detroit mantra. What was even more telling were those griping because of American cars made with "foreign" parts or labor. This from folks in Detroit where their very lives depend (or no longer matter) on the survival of the domestic auto industry.

I hate to say it, but I think most folks are done with GM and have been done with Chrysler for awhile. They've stuck em in the "no longer relevant" file along with dial up, land line phones, and cassette players. Taking the bail out from Obama and company has placed them in the same pariah files as the banks and over the top bonus'.

I just hope Ford can hold on and not have to suckle up to the government teet. I truely believe it'll be their demise if they do.

I find this line laughable:
"Chevy needs to sell cars, not make broad philosophical points about the need to support American industry."

They damn well better not preach about supporting American industry.

The American auto industry abandoned "American industry" about ten years ago or more, which in turn eliminated tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs. Yet I still supported them by buying their cars right up to 2006.

They send the work off shore, I feel no loyalty to them anymore.
Go take a look at the American percentage content of the 2010 Fusion,I did, it"ll make you shake your head. And I really liked that car, but it will be a BIG factor in what new car I buy next.

I guess, in my mind, it a case of they made their bed, now let them lay it in. I can drive an American or import, doesnt matter to me anymore.

As far as the quality thing goes, in my opinion, the domestic cars are every bit as well built as any import.

Darn it, now Im all pissed off again!

C'mon Chuck, we know yer jones'n for a Fusion Hybrid....happy.gif

Tis a different manufacturing world, that's for sure. Don't think for a minute that we won't see a Chinese built Buick in the U.S. before all is said and done if GM survives.

I think I've said before that the Taurus SHO will be the next new car in my Garage.

The aircraft industry has done the same thing. The new, yet to be released, Boeing 787 while being assembled in the US, has less than 25% of it's components built in the US. The tried and true 737 has less than 50% US built components. One of Boeing's previous CEOs bluntly stated a few years ago "We want to get out of the aircraft building business and just into the aircraft selling business". They have since moved their world headquarters from Seattle to Chicago(where they build nothing) and sold several divisions, including Wichita where I work. They made the sale not long after we celebrated our 75th year of Boeing aircraft production.

I for one still care what I drive but I won't buy a new car, maybe a new F150 if they ever make one that isn't butt ugly. I get my alternators & starters rebuilt locally & make it a point not to buy foreign parts unless no other is available. Someone better wake up companies like the big 2 & Boeing, even IBM (where Lorrie works) as the prez is trying to take out the incentives for foreign workers... but I think it's too little, too late. I understand Boeing shipping work overseas, it's the only way to get the foreign countries to buy Boeing planes, hope it bites them in the ass!
