Cash For Clunkers

Hmm...

$3500 to $4500 for any old 1984 or later vehicle on trade-in, as long as it gets 2-5 mpg worse than the car you are trading for... Courtesy of the the USA's Chinese credit card.

All cars traded in will be crushed. (most crushed cars are sent to China)

Trading for more fuel efficient vehicles means the majority of new car purchases will probably be imports, as that's what they specilize in.

Future hot-rodding material??? How much do you think Fox body mustangs are going to be worth? How about 80's-90's camaros? The minimum price will be $3500-$4500! Later down the road, they will be VERY scarce, and might cost big bucks.

NOT good for the country OR the hotrodding hobby!

WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?????

Are they TRYING to ruin the country by spending every cent on stupid crap?

A possible happy thought

June 20 2009, 10:55 AM

Maybe it'll go like most other things lately - It's supposed to run for one year, it'll take half of that to get the message across. The rules are too confusing for the general public, so mostly businesses will jump on it at first. Then some conniving dealers will figure out a way to milk it using the public's ignorance - or just plain fraud - then maybe some paper will find out, spill the beans about some rich folks milking the gov't tit and it'll be on 20/20 and Nightline - then it'll die a quiet death while we bitch about how Congress found yet another method of setting fire to tax dollars.

It's a hope, anyway.

Hey Mike - check this out

June 20 2009, 11:03 AM

Guess what - Several Mustangs I checked are exempt from the program. For example a 1986 Mustang 5.0 5 speed gets a combined 18, so it could be a target. An 88 auto 5.0 has a combined 19 - exempt

Sounds like a fine time to get rid of the old Toyota truck and get a new Ford truck, which gets better fuel mileage.

If I decide I want me a new car, I may just go buy a $200 crapmobile and trade it. You know..some old 85 caddy etc. I am not in favor of this program, but if it is there and I can get 4500 towards the new car, I would be foolish not to.

This hurts the very people who need the help the most. It'll inflate the cost of $2-3K cars to the point that poor folk can't afford em. NO ONE is gonna be able to trade their 4K car in on a NEW car costing $20-30K. We're being governed by idiots, pure and simple.

Yes, the people buying NEW cars aren't the ones driving vehicles worth less than $4000! All it will do, is make it harder for those with little money to buy a decent low dollar vehicle.

People in the market for a NEW cars will be buying up all the cheap, affordable cars that the lower income folks would be driving. I live in rural West Virginia, and there are a LOT of cars on the road here worth significantly less than $4500!

It will DEFINITELY hurt a lot of people around here!

Well, it doesnt look like I can get a new truck to beat the old truck's fuel mileage, but I've down selected to the following cars: Mazda 6, Ford Fusion or the Mercury Milan. Probably go for a test drive in the next couple of weeks.
