Yes, and I know for a fact you didn't even have to google it. And, yes, pics from the show, please. IMHO, the Super Mustang is near the top of the list of my most beautiful dragsters from the 60's. It didn't garner the respect cuz it didn't have a blower, but it was just gorgeous.
yes, there was a time when dragsters had seemed to hit a platau. Every few years some engineer would come out with some calculation that "proved" the there was limit on how fast a car (dragster) could go. For a long time 200 mph was the "limit" - then they re-calculated and it was broken again.
Along the way, someone decided to look into aerodynamics. As mentioned that huge blower sitting tall in the air stream just Had to be a big drag, same with those huge slicks and all those exposed beams and chassis components.
So we went through a period where some really beautiful dragsters were made - unfortunately, more muscle was still King when it came to moving from point "A" to point "B" in the quickest/fastest time. It was stagnate for a while - then Don Garlits came up with the rear engine dragster (following the lead of Indy cars, F1, etc). Then the Slider Clutch, better tire compounds, better / bigger blowers - and teh race was on again.
Eventually, they did find a way to use aerodynamics - the rear wings on todays dragsters are the result ( I think Don Garlits has a little something to do with that too. Must be something about all these "Don's" and dragracing?) The few times when a wing as come off during a run - proves that they are needed to run the speeds and times that are needed today. "Course, full bodied, streamlined, unlimited motor size, aero-funny cars are seriously nibbling on the supremacy of Double "AA" fuel dragsters. It ain't over yet!
