Got me a truck

Who was it?? Was it Gary or Doug that won't spend more tha 99 cents on something??

Well, I spent more than that, but I think I still got a deal in the rough.

1992 F150 Supercab?? (2 doors, extended, bench across the back, 2 buckets up front.)

300/E4OD.

The odometer says 324K miles. The truck itself likely has it, but I do not believe the motor or tranny does or they have been rebuilt along the way. Motor runs fine, idles smoothly, good oil pressure, temperature is good. No leaks that I can spot. Bonus: the AC actually works very well.

Here was the risk, the guy was having to manually shift to make the tranny shift right. No slipping at all. I noticed the Shift lever had been patched together near the OD cancel button. The Voltage and fuel guages were pegged.

I bought it for $650.

Today, I started looking closer. The fuse that goes to the instruments and to the Tranny computer was bad. I replaced it. Took it down the road, it shifts fine. It blew the fuse again. I replaced it, then looked at the guages while fiddling with the shifter lever near the OD cancel button. Sure enough....

So what it needs to be good mechanically and safety wise.
Drivers Seat...frame broke and it leans waaayyyyy back.
Shift Lever Assembly
Muffler. (It broke flush with the can at the outlet.)

Here what it needs cosmetics wise.
Various clips to hold interior panels better.
Fix a rust spot at the rocker underneath the extended portion of the cab.

The bed is bashed in on the passenger side with a crease in the flat dent. The bed has other dings.
The tailgate is trash.(I am thinking of trying to find another 2 tank long bed and tailgate)

Either take the two hubcaps off and leave them off or find a good set.

Looks like I will be visiting the bone yards. If any of you have any of the stuff I need or a line on it, I would appreciate it. I live in VA near Roanoke if travel and shipping are considerations.

Overall, I am pleased.

Great buy...

The engine will outlast you for sure, and since they were not too powerful anyways, its impossible to tell how many actual miles are on them without a tear down. I agree that the transmission probably has been rebuilt. My dad's 1995 F150 with the same combo ran strong until about 230k when the transmission let go. He had it rebuilt, and it ran till about 298k when my sister ran it out of oil and coolant and froze it. A weeks soaking with Marvel Mystery Oil unfroze everything and it still runs today. Good buy!

A guy at work had bought a 1978 Econoline with a Straight 300 back in '78. Nothing but routine maintenence was done to it. He to my knowledge still has it. It had 350K 8 year's ago. Great buy and GREAT engine.

Got and getting me some parts

Bought a Steering column with the needed OD shifter and an very good tailgate from a '94 and the cluster $125

Getting a Set of factory hubcaps $15

Going to look at a 89 full size Bronco for the seats and console. I have been told that they will work. Any info you guys have on the seat issue, I will appreciate. He wants $75 for the seats and console. There is a rip in the driver's seat. (I will cover the dang things.)

Will have Meineke price a replacement muffler. (One of the better shops in my area.)

Your rust spot is in a common area for that body style truck, it's why I sold my '94

Well
The shift lever has been replaced.
The lens on the cluster has been replaced. I can now actually read the instruments.
I replaced the cluster bezel. I have a set of 4wd switches that I don't need, but what the heck.
I went and looked at the seats and console out of the '89 full size bronco. $50 later, they are mine and in place. They fit perfectly. (After looking at the console, I left the original in the truck for now.) No power lumbar, but I don't care.
The tailgate is on, but I need to do some adjusting. It doesn't like to open up.
Replaced the drivers door switch. I now have dome lights when I open the driver's door.

Have the muffler and the tune-up left on the to do list.

The 89 Bronco had a body that is about perfect. It also have a good running 351W and E4OD. The truck is complete except for the seats. The fuel cell and the carb have been sold as well. He has the fiberglass top in good shape. $400 will take it. I suspect he would take $300. If it hasn't sold by the end of this week, it is crusher time. That is too bad because this thing is really in good shape. The catch - no title. Here is the link if any of you are interested in talking to the kid. His name is Charlie. The bumpers are tweaked, but the body is pretty dang good.
