I bought the GRX 9 foot 5 weight for my 10 yr old son who is just beginning to fly fish. Its a good starter rod for under 100.00. It's kinda forgiving for someone that isn't a very accomplished caster.
P.S this is a nice site, I plan on visiting more often.
After breaking my Redington Wayfarer 7 weight on a resent steelhead trip I ran into the local fly shot and purchased a 9', two piece, Cortland GRX 7/8 weight rod. It was a very inexpensive rod (no case or tube supplied) and I was pleasantly surprized at how well it performed. It's heavier than I was use to but it was a very adequate rod for fresh steelhead just out of the lake on their run up the creek.
It's a bit stiffer than I'd like but it casts nicely, has reasonable sensitivity and handled 8 lb fish very nicely. I found the detachable fighting butt and the double uplocking reel set an unexpected bonus on this inexpesive rod. While I wouldn't list it as my first choice it was a very adequate rod that allowed me to continue my trip with out breaking the bank. If your looking for an entry level steelhead rod or are on a limited budget this is a rod worth considering.

I just purhased a 5wt GRX for my 13 year old son to start out with. Does anyone have any experience with this rod?
Thanks
