Response to Teaching children about sex

Parents raise a ridiculous amount of hell over schools or churches trying to teach their kids about sex because it's "not their place." OK, so it's the parents' place, but then the same parents don't talk to their kids about sex. "Don't do it 'til you're married. God says sex is for man and wife." Well, that clearly works extremely well, what with all the STDs and teen pregnancies. When schools try to step in, the same parents get angry. Then the sex ed programs get watered down to the point that they don't even work, and I think we all saw what happened when a church tried to address the situations, so the good Christian parents of the world stick with preaching abstinence and the kids suffer.

Guess who's ACTUALLY teaching your kid about sex? Kids. I have heard the most unbelievable things said between third graders where I work. The "informed" one who usually has an older brother or sister gets a twisted, unrealistic, daring, enticing view of sex and passes it on to their friends, and soon or later, all the kids they know have such a confused concept of it. If by some small chance, your kid doesn't get indoctrinated in by their peers, then the TV will do it, but I can guarantee you that your kid knows FAR more about sex than you think they do, and the older ones are having FAR more sex than you think they are. Period. No amount of trying to shelter them is going to work. At. All.
