Response to Isn't Sex-Ed being taught in schools?

It is, but the kids aren't learning anything real. The emphasis is on abstinence. I graduated from Cullman within the last 5 years, and in our "Health" class, we spent a lot of the semester on smoking, drinking, nutrition, etc. (all good things). When it came to sex ed, we talked mostly about the reproductive system and what each part does and learned to label it. Then we watched some awkward, badly-acted videos. We briefly discussed options like IUDs and diaphragms, which SORRY, are not valid options for teenagers. We talked about birth control and condoms (and did NOT learn how to put them on, which a lot of people try to say they teach you), too, but for like 15 minutes each in one class. Then we talked about abstinence and the reasons to stay away from all sex, ever for like a week. Which is fine, abstinence is a very valid option and actually the one I used in high school, but... I can't say the same for most of my peers.

I think kids need to learn about how disgusting STDs are, what the consequences are, maybe show them some pictures of rotting genitals or something... OK, maybe not that, but I seriously don't think a lot of teenagers even understand how serious STDs are, especially since most who have them are so afraid of getting busted for having sex by their parents that they're afraid to get tested/treated and the STDs get much worse.

Anyway, this was poorly written, but it's late... I think I got my point across somewhat, though.
