Offer to Help

September 6 2005, 12:20 AM

I am also a disability attorney, married to a disability advocate with severe CP, plus we just adopted a 6 yr old from Russia with moderate CP. Travel would be very difficult for us to accomplish BUT I believe I can help substantially via the internet if someone can help me determine specific, manageable needs to be accomplished ....ie: I have no trouble going to manufacturers, big companies, funders, NFPs, churches, media or whatever to get donations of items urgently needed or find specific help for specific people who can be verified by anyone in authority.

Here is what we have been posting on the listings of help available:

We are in NW Arkansas with large double-wide on 10 acre mini-farm. We are DISABILITY ADVOCATES! who can help get services started asap --special education, med help, disability assistance, etc. Home is wheelchair accessible + we have disability mini-van. Pets, horses, OK so long as we have space. Plenty room to camp out or RV in our yard until other opportunities arise. Also have two older vehicles which can be used for local regular transportation.

To share home itself: MUST pass same criminal background checks as we just had to when we adopted our school-age son from Russia last year. NO drugs, alcohol, smoking in home, or weapons on premises, no abuse of disabled, children or pets.

We also have a separate small mobile home next door which can be cleared out (put storage elsewhere) and used.

WE ESPECIALLY WANT TO HELP ANYONE WHO IS DISABLED BUT INDEPENDENT (and therefore may have difficulty finding an accessible place to stay) ---FAMILIES with Lots of small children, esp is special needs or adoptive children----ELDERLY ---MEDICALLY FRAGILE----CHILDREN with or without parents---PETS, HORSES with or without their families---OR ANY OTHER MANAGEABLE SPECIAL NEEDS SITUATION.

Willing to try to work out private or emergency interstate compact placement/child care here for children in need of home temporarily so long as it complies with all required state/federal regs.

NOTE: Just to be honest: this community is a tiny town in the Ozarks not known for its tolerance of urban, Black Americans, although some have in fact recently relocated here. We have experienced some poor attitudes toward my husband's wheelchair and child being adopted from Russia. Eventually we plan to relocate ourselves for this reasons as we plan to adopt additional children toward a large ethnically and culturally diverse family.
