I am a special education preschool teacher. I can help provide toys and other needed items for young children who have evacuated to the Augusta, Georgia area.
Through my work at Los Angeles County Museum of Art and other art institution in the greater Los Angeles area, I have worked extensively with children, teenagers and adult with all types of disabilities. Although I am not an certified art therapist, I do possess expertise in the use of art as a healing and therapeutic tool. I could conduct art workshops for children and adults that would help them sort through their experiences and deal with their emotions. I could also provide workshops that would be fun and provide a relief from the stress of relocation. I'm available in the Southern California area, especially in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. I would be available 10 hours a week.. I would provide all supplies.
I am an experinced interpreter for people with deaf/blindness and who are deaf and am a special education advocate for families who have children with disabilties. I could volenteer some time as a SSP for a person with deaf/blindness and help families negotiate school systems to ensure specialized services are obtained for thier children.
I have a Masters degree in special education and many years experience working with people with disabilities. I have taught people with developmental disabilities. I also have case management, information and referral, benefits counseling, work activity center and Center for Independent Living experience. I am extremely concerned about the welfare of citizens with disabilities who are victims of Katrina. I will go whever needed as long as I have an outlet in which to plug my power wheelchair at night. My trusty chair and I are completely independent. As a veteran of the disability rights movement, I know we had better pull together and help ourselves or we might not get what we need. I can be away for a fairly extended period of time.
