Recorded Webcast for People Counseling Katrina Evacuees
September 7 2005, 4:16 PM
This is a LiveMeeting recorded webcast made to advise those who are providing stress-counseling for the Katrina evacuees in Texas. Many of the points are applicable to anyone wanting to help individuals surviving the current (or, for that matter, any) catastrophe.
The presentation, Crisis Intervention and Compassion Fatigue, is conducted by an Employee Assistance Program counselor with skills in providing stress-counseling to meet a variety of duress-related needs, including those surviving natural disasters. It is 18 minutes long. There is no charge for accessing or using this presentation.
Steps to access the webcast recording:
1. Click this link or copy/paste it to your ‘net browser.
2. In the first View Recording screen, type your name in the ‘Your Name’ field. Click the View Recording button. (No Recording Key is required.)
3. In the second View Recording screen, type your e-mail address and ‘company name’ (i.e., affiliation) in the appropriate fields. These are for routine record-keeping purposes to track the number of ‘hits’ on the recording. Click the View Recording button.
4. In the View Recording Info screen click the icon next to Microsoft Office Live Meeting Replay. This launches WindowsMediaPlayer to run the recording using streaming audio/video.
If you have trouble running the recording through WindowsMediaPlayer, try downloading a version of this free software compatible with your operating system by connecting to
We hope you find this helpful for service provider organizations serving hurricane survivors with disabilities. We found the section about what not to say to the survivors insightful.
Sincerely,
Phil and Marsha Coleman

I am a Mental Health Specialist/Clinician and Counselor with basic EMT skills and a long history of effectively working with crisis victims and Emergency Services from Nashville to Chicago. My counseling expertise has focussed on grief, abuse, addiction and dual disorders.
I also have multiple New Orleans ties, having had an apartment in the French Quarter for a while. Currently, I am in a position at work to be able to contribute 2 six-hour per week periods of time to the staffing shelters for the victims of Katrina in Nashville, TN.
The local Red Cross chapter states on its website that all positions were filled within 12 hours and they are currently not open to further volunteers. However, please consider my support along with the frontrunners since I can offer basic life-saving skills and mental health counseling while staffing the shelters.

Dear MHP, do you know of any organization serving the people effected by Katrina who offer opportunities for mental health professionals to offer on phone counseling on a volunteer basis? If no would you be interested in setting up some sort of volunteer network. I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with 20 years experience who can offer up to 4 hours a week if I can have some control over the phone appointment time etc. I could enlist others in the SF Bay area who can help. Let me know if you know who to connect with. Thanks David Beckstein - Aptos California (Monterey Bay)
I am the owner of SageThinking, LLC training and consulting. I can provide resources, education and training to support community providers in helping persons with disabilities manage grief and loss issues. Located in Seattle, WA area.

Spent over two weeks in Mississippi coast post-Katrina, volunteering--witnessed several issues needing to be addressed there. I have extensive experience providing functional assessment and training/rehabilitation within both hospital and home-settings for those with acquired neurological conditions and other medical conditions. Can assist with transition to novel environments and help discern (and develop) the structure/settings needed to maximize independence based on cognitive and medical needs. Have worked with psychological issues concerning adapting to changes in variety of contexts.

Uncertified psychiatric rehabilitation practitioner can't do his work in professional way. So first thing is that psychiatric rehabilitation practitioner should be registered.
