I am an experinced interpreter for people with deaf/blindness and who are deaf and am a special education advocate for families who have children with disabilties. I could volenteer some time as a SSP for a person with deaf/blindness and help families negotiate school systems to ensure specialized services are obtained for thier children.

I have taught special education in both Virginia and California and currently manage participant adult services at a non profit for children/adults with developmental disabilities in the san francisco bay area. I am available to volunteer in a number of ways:

- going for a long weekend (Fri-Mon) to shelters to help with children with autism/other developmental disabilities if airfare is provided

- working with families relocated to the san francisco/san jose areas of california in finding services for people with disabilities

- working with local schools to develop IEPS for relocated children with disabilities

- helping with respite care for families recently relocated to the san francisco/san jose bay area

- open to other suggestions as well

Please email if I can be of help!

Sincerely,

Amanda

I have a son with autism, epilepsy, and oral apraxia and also work as an ABA (applied behavioral analysis) implementor. I teach kids with disabilities in a 1-on-1 teaching environment using a variety of teaching tools. I am volunteering my time and skills for anyone in the Kansas City metropolitan area. I will teach a few hours a week or offer respite care as needed at no charge. I also have experience working with kids with downs syndrome, cerebral palsy, and a variety of disabilities. I am familiar with feeding tubes as well.

Re: Resources for Special Needs Children

September 19 2005, 11:58 AM

I am going to Biloxi Mississippi September 27 for a week, I would like to volunteer with special needs children affected by the hurricane. I have worked in the school system in Northern Virginia in the special education field with children with MR and autism and behavioral issues. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? I will be staying at a church on Pass Rd in Biloxi and will not have my own transportation but could probably get someone to drive me if its not to far.
Thanks.
Connie.
