thanks for giving us something to think about

Thanks for being the first to post a reaction and for giving us something to think about, Jason. Although it gets a bit tricky when you refer to a third person point of view as first person (take a look at Jacob's Room again--it's actually in third person), I like the energy of your response. You might want to think about ways in which Woolf does depart from convention. She uses third person, but I think what you're getting at is her use of interior monologue and stream of consciousness. There is almost no exposition or explanation. Rather, we get the felt immediacy of characters' subjective perceptions. I do like your observation that it's difficult to tell where "reality" ends and imagination begins. You may recall in the first day's discussion that indeed the notion of an absolute truth or an objectively verifiable "reality" to "(re)present" is no longer viable, in the view of many modernists. We'll talk more about this. Let's see what others have to say in response to Jacob's room. And try to share your reaction to a particular character or scene as well as these general comments. I'd like to see what you think of the actual text.
