Katrina Discrimination being monitored

September 13 2005, 11:42 PM

Art, Senators Boxer, Feinstein, Congressmembers Pelosi, Waters,Miller, Woolsey, Lee And All:

We truly Need your Help NOW.

I am working on a very detailed investigation. Word is that disabled for the most part, were not evacuated from homes, centers, hospitals; etc. They were denied access to busses, and other forms of transportation. In fact the majority of transportation used for evacuation was not accessible at all, with disabled persons being told if they could not climb on the buses they could not ride. They also were told to leave their chairs and scooters behind.

Many of the bodies now being found are heavily from this population. However we believe there is an attempt being made to hide the true numbers as to how many disabled were truly left behind in nursing homes, rehab centers, retirement centers, group homes, hospitals, etc. We believe that these figures are vital to guarantee that never again will the disabled community be left at such a risk and ignored in disaster planning.

Disabled are being denied the use of their accommodations of accessible equipment and devices. Service animals are being taken away and being denied access to shelters. Disabled being taken to some of the other States are immediately being sent to nursing home.

A major concern for those disabled who have been sent to, or will be sent to Texas, is this is a State that tried to eliminate the ADA in total. They also have Years worth of waiting list for assistance for their own disabled never mind any new who would need assistance.

It is vital that we get assistants who know Disability rights to the Flood areas immediately to assist the Disabled and guarantee that their right are protected.

Redcross Shelters are denying access to disabled and disabled service animals . This info is coming to us from our contacts everywhere. Protection and Advocacy is putting together files. I am trying to document for Nancy Pelosi (via Tom) , as well as I believe our Party should make a stand if we can document this.

A number of other State and National groups are also following up on this concern. Television, Cabal, and the Radio have covered some of these cases. They have done specials on the Group home that was found with about 80 disabled with about 34 dead, the home with the Blind where the aides left the blind behind. The blind women who refused to leave without her Dog, and the Police who were demanding she leave her dog behind. We have had calls, e-mails etc.

We need the Help of our Legislative Party and Leaders Now.
