Emergency preparedness is quite a hobby of mine. I just found this site, and am interested to see what kind of dialogue's happen here. I wish I had more funds to be better prepared. As a person with a disability, it is very difficult financially (for me) to be as prepared as I would like to be.
Not only financially, but logistically this is a difficulty. Most of the people I know who have disabilities do not live in houses, but in apartments of some kind. This living arrangement does not lend itself well to stockpiling of the type necessary to be well prepared in case of an emergency. I mean, where do you put a months worth of emergency food and water in a two bedroom apartment that is already quite full? I have a storage garage I rent, but even that is pretty full with my "regular" stuff. Room for food, water, spare/emergency clothing, emergency tools and equipment, cold weather gear, emergency camping gear, etc. is a significant issue to consider for people with disabilities.
Another issue of course is medical needs. I know getting my medicine even a day earlier than Medicare/Medicaid says is allowed almost impossible, even when I tell them it is for a trip or similar. Getting medication for an emergency stockpile would be effectively impossible, and I haven't figured a legal way around it. Lying and saying my meds were stolen or lost or destroyed or something might be acceptable to some, by not to me considering the potential consequences.
For anyone who needs electricity, this is yet another great concern. I know a couple with different medical conditions, but both require those C-PAP breathing machines for sleeping. What the heck would they do if the power went out for several weeks (as it did in some sections of our fine state this year) due to severe weather? Luckily it did not happen to them in particular, but it really gave me pause to consider that situation. I know my own mother needs an oxygen compressor 24 hours a day. If the power went out on her, she would likely be dead within a few hours.
Just my first thoughts thrown out after finding this site. Looking forward to some interesting conversations, if they happen.
