WHEN A CUCUMBER BECOMES A PICKLE…
We spend 18 years rushing to learn everything we can about laws, rights and responsibilies to support our child with a disability. Then “poof!” our child turns 18, becomes and “adult” and that cucumber becomes a pickle. He/she can never be a cucumber again because the rules have changed forever!
If we are to help our now adult child segue the maze of the adult world (both the “real world” and the world of services) we must go back to the school of hard knocks to un-learn much of what we thought we knew, and learn an entirely new language.
If you have a child 16 or over, I want to invite you to an informal fact finding evening at my home.
Goals of the evening are:
- What is working for your adult child within the system and community; what is not working;
- Have budget cuts adversely affected your adult child;
- What are the successes you’ve experienced; what are the failures;
- What are the services that have worked best;
- What you think professionals, including legislators should know.
- Other issues and concerns
As for me and my son who is now 20, it’s been a very challenging road – sometimes bringing me to a new level of tears and fears. We have had many successes as well. Some of you may know my work in advocacy and film, and you may even know my son Taylor. For over 20 years I have stood for change and consistent person-centered advocacy. I invite you to attend this fact finding gathering.
