What's Blooming September 1 --> September 15 (Please include zone)

Hello folks! It's me again with another What's Blooming installment. I'm in zone 6, southwestern Pennsylvania, and we're done up here. Don't get me wrong, lots of stuff is still blooming, it's just that there's nothing new and there hasn't been for a few weeks, now. I suppose if I wanted to, I might find a hummer plant that would bloom in early October, even up here in the north, but there's no point to it. I expect my birds will be gone by mid September, and certainly by October 1st. Late bloomers make no sense around here.

On the other hand, maybe some of you southerners would like to report some late blooming plants opening up just in time for arriving migrants. Am I right, or should I drop this ongoing thread? Is it still of any use this late in the year?

All of these are still going strong for me:

Salvia coccinea
Salvia guaranitica
Salvia Black and Blue
Lonicera sempervirens (later edited to): 'Alabama Crimson'
Hollyhocks
Cannas -- 'Species Red,' and 'Wisley Dwarf'
Ipomoea quamoclit
Ipomoea x multifida
Mina lobata
Cuphea llavea Flamenco Series 'Samba'
Ruellia elegans
Dicliptera suberecta
Mirabilis jalapa and multiflora (The last to bloom since I planted them late)
Fuchsia 'Electric Lights'
Fuchsia 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt'
Plectranthus 'Lavender Lady,' I think it was called
Weigela 'Red Prince' Reblooming
Ipomopsis still blooming but beginning to wind down and set seed
Zinnias, of course, and will be until frost
Impatiens walleriana (spelling?) until frost, I'm sure
Manettia bicolor -- still going strong, continuous all summer bloomer, but getting potbound
Scarlet Runner Beans (Can't remember the binomial name)
Silene regia

Mimulus cardinalis quit some time in early August
Hibiscus 'Fireball' also stopped, I think some time in early August

Kristin, I'll keep posting as long as these threads are alive. I have quite a few plants that will be coming into flower in the next few weeks, including Justicia fulvicoma and Salvia elegans.

Ruby-throated migration should continue here until at least the end of October and hopefully, other species will be moving in as well. My plantings are planned to favor late migrants and the winterers so under most circumstances, I will have something in bloom all winter.

Dianne, my Pineapple Sage [Salvia elegans] will probably begin flowering in a couple of weeks as will the Salvia 'Anthony Parker', which is a hybrid of the Pineapple Sage. However, the Pineapple Sage at the banding site is going great guns already. It flowered well into June and then took a break, but now, it is back and ready for the migrants and winterers.

Re: What's Blooming September 1 --> September 15 (Please include zone)

September 2 2007, 1:05 PM

Terrific! That's quite a response in a relatively short time. I'll try to remember to post this thread twice a month throughout the winter. If I forget, when everything's frozen and brown around here, anyone else is free to continue it if they think it is worthwhile. It seems that at least some people think it is.

As we gather more and more data, I might even try to make sense of it and summarize by zone the succession of bloom for different humplants. That will be quite a bit of work, but might be fun to do. I'm not sure I'll ever get around to it, but it might serve as a useful guide. To that end, it might also be useful to write when things are done for the season. I wasn't as good at that as I could have been. For example, my Mimulus cardinalis bloomed for a long time, but eventually it quit, and I didn't take note of exactly when.

Ultimately, if we can get enough contributions, this could be useful for people planning their gardens. I find myself often wanting to companion plant things and coordinate bloom times, and end up being misled by the times given in catalogues. It's disappointing when you put two plants together that you think would look great, and then they end up blooming at different times with no overlap. This can happen even when two different catalogues specify "May/June," for example. It just doesn't always work because the suppliers may be in different zones from each other. I've been burned on this before. Also, when dealing with hummingbirds, knowing accurate bloom times helps in planning an unbroken succession of bloom.

Joann, your lovely photo makes me want to plant Cross Vine, but I'd have to build another trellis, and I don't know where in heck I'd put it! Also, what is your location and zone where those beautiful Cross Vine flowers are blooming? One of the purposes of this thread is to get a sense of what blooms when in different zones and locations.

Dianne, are those salvias of some sort in your hummingbird favorite spot? Please, do tell!

This is the 3rd year that I've planted Hyacinth Beans but it's the first year that it's bloomed!
All my salvia's: lady in red, coral nymph, white nymph, b&b, blue and white mix, patens blue angel and
some pink ones I have no idea what the names are now

and then...
cuphea, matchless
angelonia
blue fortune, purple pygmy, and golden jubilee agastaches
both butterfly bushes
annise hyssop (but it's almost done for this year)
tropical bleeding heart (one of the cleredendruns)
both hibiscus, blush and a wine colored are reblooming
garden phlox (white)

can't think of the rest... anyway, some of these will be keepers, and then I've got some that gotta go!!! I planted bee balm/monarda and they were the panorama mix or something and they are all purple and nobody paid any attention to them. Now they are all mildewey and just not my cup of tea so will move them to the trash soon!

This is my main hummer bed!

Kristin it is a salvia. I was sent the seed last year. I called it my "mystery salvia". I posted a picture last year and was told the name but I can't find where I wrote the name down and I don't remember. It does die back during the winter but puts out in the spring. It also reseeds like crazy. I have just let it take over part of this bed. The blooms drop off in the afternoon but the plants are full again in the mornings. Maybe someone will remember what the nama.

Gloria that is beautiful. I gave on bee-balm too. I dug all of mine up last year and planted other things.

Joann nice cross vine. I had a few blooms in August.

little red morning glory and purple hyacinth bean are really blooming, the former for the first time and the latter for the second.

confetti lantana, s. black and blue, coccinea and subrotunda, tithonia, a. tutti frutti and apricot sprite, cuphea david verity, russellia and ruellia, and the surprise, lord baltimore hardy hibiscus is starting a third flush. the first year, it made one blossom. the second year, one flush. last year it bloomed twice. I've never seen a hummer use it, but it puts on a 9 inch diameter crimson blossom that really draws attention. here's a pic from last year:

Hi everyone,

I'm in MD, like Glo. Not much new to report, really. My Pineapple and Mexican Sage are nice
and bushy but no blooms. Maybe in a week or too. But if the temps stay as cool as they have
been, I doubt there will be much time for them to flourish. It's been a very weird spring and
summer.

They love my Manettia bicolor, which has two tone flowers that look like candy corn. I didn't know there was a red one, either. Are the flowers solid red in color? Where did you find it? Mailorder? Do you know the scientific name or the varietal name so I can be sure of finding the same thing?

I had no idea they'd like mine so much. I thought it might just be one of those gimmicky plants, but it has definitely turned out to be one of my most successful hummingbird plants this summer.

The red Manettia is Manettia cordifolia, which grows extremely well down here. My original plant is more than 25 years old. The red-and-yellow Manettia inflata [sometimes called Manettia bicolor or Manettia luteo-rubra] is a better hummer attractor though. It is one I've had trouble keeping alive.

Some of my cannas have just started to bloom. S. praeclara has been a non stop bloomer since spring but I am afraid I may have lost two of them last night as we had 60 mph winds, lightening and a little rain. It isn't light yet so it will be a while until I can survey the damage to the plants. I can tell the dog's fence is down. I am still hoping to see the S. coccinea pinkish lavender and the purple bloom. One has budded up but can't remember which one it is.

Re: What's Blooming September 1 --> September 15 (Please include zone)

Several fall-flowering species are showing signs of breaking 'dormancy' and are either flowering or budding. I have not seen heavy migration yet here and there is very, very little feeder usage. Our peak is usually late September or even early October.

Campsis radicans [Trumpet Creeper] - red and orange - still king, but slowing down quite a lot. Once it finishes, hummers will be more inclined to come down into the yard.

Calliandra emarginata [Powderpuff]
Calliandra californica [Baja Fairy Duster]
Calliandra haematocephala [Powderpuff - formerly species unknown]

Abutilon pictum

Passiflora vitifolia [Scarlet Passionflower]

Lonicera sempervirens [Coral Honeysuckle]

Manettia cordifolia [Firecracker Vine]

Ipomoea hederifolia [Red Morning Glory]

Malvaviscus drummondii [Sultan's Turban]
Malvaviscus sp [unknown species] - gets huge

Cuphea 'David Verity' [Mexican Cigar Plant]
Cuphea micropetala [Giant Mexican Cigar Plant]
Cuphea cyanea
Cuphea llavea

Canna indica

Justicia brandegeana [Ugly Shrimp Plant]
Justicia fulvicoma

Pachystachys coccinea [Cardinal's Guard]

Porphyrocoma pohliana [Brazilian Fireworks]

Russelia equisetiformis [Fountain Plant], red and yellow
Russelia sarmentosa

Agastache 'Tutti Frutti'
Agastache rupestris

Sinningia sellovii

Salvia coccinea - red, 'Brenthurst', 'Bicolor', 'Pink Dreamsicle', pure white, 'Vermilion', 'Susan's Dark Pink Lavender', 'Susan's Dark Lavender', Susan's Pink Lavender', variegated leaf
Salvia greggii 'Cherry Queen'
Salvia microphylla - species, 'Hot Lips', 'San Carlos Festival', 'Red Velvet'
Salvia x jamensis 'La Tarda'
Salvia subrotunda
Salvia miniata
Salvia guaranitica, species and 'Black and Blue'
Salvia macrophylla 'Tingo Blue'
Salvia 'Blue Chiquita'
Salvia elegans
Salvia 'Anthony Parker'
Salvia splendens 'Van Houtteii' - burgundy

Nicotiana glauca

Odontonema strictum [Firespike], red and pink/purple

Stachytarpheta jamaicensis [Smuggler's Vervain] - purple, dwarf red, coral

Anisacanthus quadrifidus v wrightii
Anisacanthus 'Pumpkin'

Orthosiphon staminius [Cat Whiskers]

Scutellaria costaricana

Hamelia patens [Firebush, Mexican Firebush]

Callistemon citrinus [Bottlebrush]

Hummer action continues to be relatively slow though it seems to have picked up this morning. Trumpet Creeper is still getting the lion's share of the action [what there is of it]. However, flowering appears to be slowing down quite a bit. After we get into September, the Trumpet Creeper is never as good as it was all summer. Red Morning Glory, Hamelia patens, and Calliandra haematocephala are also very popular. At this point, the Red Morning Glory has smothered many, many plants. Still, it is very popular and will peter out in a few weeks, at which time it can be pulled out.

Salvia subrotunda and the pure white Salvia coccinea are the most used Salvias in back while Salvia 'Blue Chiquita' is getting good action in front. Salvia 'Anthony Parker' has just started blooming and it has attracted some attention. Now that the Odontonema strictum are in flower, they are attracting some good interest. The purple-flowered form seems to be more popular than the red!

Ugly Shrimp Plant is just about to 'bust out' and it will be the mainstay into spring. The purple-flowered Smuggler's Vervain is very good right now, but as soon as we get the first cold wind, it will shut down.

I alway wonder why everyones fall blooming sages - Mexican Bush Sage, Salvia mexicana, Pineapple Sage, Anthony Parker - always bloom a month ahead of mine. No signs of flowers on any of these.

Ward, the Salvia elegans is somewhat earlier than usual for me while the Salvia 'Anthony Parker' is right on time. Salvia mexicana 'Dan Lane' shows no sign of buds and doesn't usually flower until November. However, an F2 hybrid involving Salvia mexicana and Salvia involucrata is setting buds. Interestingly, I cannot keep Salvia involucrata alive. Salvia leucantha isn't doing anything either.

"Give me land lots of land under open skies above; Don't fence me in..." Is that how the song goes? Wow, my yard is like a postage stamp compared to yours. Beautiful garden Dianne.

Linda,
Several of us have Dicliptera suberecta. I grow mine in pots and it starts blooming in late summer for me. I did do a couple of extra cuttings and I put those in the ground just because I had plenty in pots and wanted to see if there is any chance it could survive in the ground but the ones in pots bloomed much earler than the ones in the ground. Hummers do use it quite a bit. Very easy plant to overwinter in pots and super easy to take and root cuttings.

I was wondering why there were 2 9/1-9/15 threads. Than I stated to read it and saw STAN'S post and was like Whhhhhhhhhhhhaaaatt?? I guess someone did a search for it an picked the wrong one.

Hey Stan, how's the garden this season???? Do you have to worry about clouds and too rainy weather up there like we did this summer? Make another post when you get a chance! We miss them.

Kristin, Pls. don't stop your "What's Blooming" threads. I'm finding them very interesting and entertaining and am taking lots of notes. As you say, I find the information so helpful when trying to 'pair up' bloom time and sequencing for garden designs.

I love the photos, too! Lot's of fun to see others' gardens!

Of note in our southwestern Ohio Zone 6a HB garden this week:

Our big fat red red zinnias are looking quite attractive waving in the breeze and I'm sure they have something to do with drawing some of the several migrators into the yarden in the past week or so. Started from seed in late June and very eye catching.

Our Cardinal Climber vines (in prominent containers on trellises on the deck) continue to bloom (sparsely) and attract HBs. I must figure out how to get more 'bloom' and less 'green' on these.

Tithonia (2nd crop from late June planted seed)are just beginning to bloom. (Other May planted Tithonia are tall and rangey, looking beat out and need to be yanked).

I am curious about the 'Red Morning Glory' some of you are growing...is this just any old red morning glory or does it best to be a particular variety? MGs seem like something easy to grow and a quick filler to tuck in around our old wood pile, etc.

Touch me nots and partridge peas are blooming along the woods and I see hummers nectaring in those.

A Buddleia bush (a NOID, but a pale-ish lavendar with reddish eye in the large blooms) started from a cutting and planted in a container is blooming profusely now and quite attractive to the hummers. I'm surprised this thing got so big this summer and it is blooming much later than our other buddlieas. Note to self: take more cuttings of this one!

Our several salvias are of little or no interest to the HBs. I don't think they are well placed in the garden and are being out shone by the Zinnias, tithonias, lantanas, etc. Must reposition them for next year.

Love the threads! Keep them coming! J.

Judy
A Buddleia cutting will bloom a little later than established plants especially if it is in a container. The one cutting I took of my Royal red started blooming about a week or so later than the parent both are at opposite ends of one another in the same bed. I will be moving one next spring. They grow rapidly and in some cases quite large in one growing season. Next spring when I cut mine back, I will use a tomato cage to keep it growing more upright. Right now it is catching the west wind and leaning into other plants. What Salvia do you have that the hummers are ignoring? I normally get much more attention to Salvias than I do Lantana or Zinnias

Thanks, Penny. I am getting a kick out of growing some of our garden plants from cuttings this year. It's a first for me.

I have about 6 Salvia Black and Blue and a few of the Yvonne's. Also the blue May Night types that aren't particularly known to be HB plants.

Though I don't understand why they aren't interested in my black and blue's , except that they are off in their own section of the yard and maybe the HBs miss them.

We are still getting a lot of hits on the Cardinal Climber vines which kind of surprises me.

Cardinal Climber is always a big hit with the hummers as is its cousin Cypress Vine. Cyress vine is a heavy reaseeder but Cardinal climber doesn't reseed.
