Other Juvie Activity

Well, not hummers...but we like other birds too, right?

Yesterday's fun was with some juvie chickadees. We were having a "heat wave"...hot (93F), at least for the Seattle area. While I was hand watering my brugmansias & flower beds, 5 or 6 young chickadees showed up. Partly because I was wearing a straw farm hat that mostly shielded my face from their view & partly because they're still at that "innocent" stage where they aren't very afraid.

They were landing in the brugs very close to my face, highly interested in the water spraying from the nozzle. I moved very slowly & turned down the water volume to give them a gentle spray. They really got into having showers.

Twice I had one land on the nozzle, mere inches from my hand & once there was one that landed very briefly on my wrist. I tried putting my index finger out the length of the nozzle, but none landed on it. They hung around quite awhile and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, chattering amongst themselves in their very social way.

Day 2

I just got 2 chickadees to sit on my hand & finger while holding the spray nozzle! They totally love the water...will use the birdbaths, but prefer the fresh spray.

Yep! It's been a good year for bird babies in my backyard. I've seen more of them than usual. The wrens that raise babies on my back porch every year have already taken batch #2 out into the world.

How adorable, Patrick! I love chickadees and wrens and would love to see them in my yard at any age. You really did have a fantastic experience.

Yes...having lots of fun! Got my little friends to sit on my hand & finger 2 days in a row. Today was stormy, so I didn't go out. Maybe we can get a repeat tomorrow.

I expect they'll grow out of the innocence and become wary of people, but it would be so cool if I could get them to repeat this throughout the summer.

Patrick-- That's terrific, I really do think they get accoustomed to a certain person presence and even come to expect certain things, keep up the good work.
