Slugs on cardinal flower!

I noticed something has been stripping my cardinal flower stem, so I woke up early this morning and caught them in action! 3 small ones and one real big one. I thought of putting sand around the base of the stem, I have heard that they won't slither over sand because it cuts them. Does anybody have a better ideas?

I use slug bait (forgot the brand) which claims not to harm pets. Diatomaceous earth is supposed to be irritating to them. Or perhaps the beer saucer method will work: at least they die happy. Disgusting creatures!

Slugs on Cardinal Flower!

I've never heard about slugs on Cardinal Flower---interesting. I would always choose the most non-toxic method of the beer traps or diatamaceous earth---I'm not sure if sand would work, but it might be worth a try. All of the rain we've had have definitely increased the number of slugs in our garden unfortunately. Good luck and let us know what works best.

Cherrie, pick them off and then go for the beer, 10oz for you and 2oz for the slugs

Thanks for the responses, and Sandi I like your style! I don't know if I can give up any of my Corona though. Seriously though, I have heard of putting out a jar lid filled with beer. I think I will try that first because my Annabelle hydrangea mysteriously died which is located in the same area. I'll let you know the results. I don't trust that i'm good enough to remember to pick them off every morning, so any steps of precaution are best for me.
