Broad-billed Hummingbird

If this guy has a broad bill, do we have wide mouths?

Why was it named broad-billed anyway? It sure is a lovely bird.

Broad-billed Hummingbirds DO have a broad bill - at least at the base. It's not as visible in this shot, but if you look at the bill from the top or the bottom, the base is considerably wider than most other (at least U.S.) hummingbirds' bills.

Admittedly, it's not a very pretty name for a truly gorgeous bird.

Thanks for the info and link, Kevin. The poor little guy is dwarfed by the 'massive' hand holding it. Must scared him to death. Now I must examine my own mouth in the mirror for its width.

The photo was shot in Desert State Park near the Mexican border. A lovely bird, indeed.
