Gloxinia sylvatica

'Bolivian Sunset' or Gloxinia sylvatica is a plant I mentioned, quite a while ago. It is a lovely plant although I have experienced some problems trying to grow it!
But, presently, I have some growing in a container on my table on the porch. So, I was surprised to see on first of three occasions, a female Ruby Throat swoop in and start feeding at it, and seems to prefer it over the Salvias and the Cypress vine that are presently blooming right in front of it!
Cheri from Vancouver has expressed interest if I eventually got some seed, which I may do if it ever grows properly, but thought I would advise you all of a different plant you may wish to try in your gardens, next year.

I have one of these growing in a pot. It was blooming when I first bought it 2 springs ago. The hummers did use it that first year. Overwintered it and put it back outside this past spring, but it had reverted to its normal blooming time which is fall, like pinapple sage it is a short day bloomer. It spread to fill the whole pot and bloomed like crazy, after most of my hummers had left for the year. It has since gotten real raggity, and I have cut it way back. If it makes it thru the winter I am going to try and trick it into blooming early by putting black plastic over it

Gloxinia sylvatica

My plants are full of buds, can't wait to see if anybody will use those electric orange flowers.
Last winter it was a favorite with the Black-chinned who visited my yard on a regular basis, as well as the Buffy who was here for a little while.

Lizette, glad to hear your new 'digs' are being appreciated!
Meant to mention that one of the 'Dwarf Red Vervain' has germinated!
